Problem Description

A majority of the MOSFETs provided by a specific supplier have been discovered to be marginal in design. These MOSFETs are part of the 2.5V power supply. The power supply is a push/pull design, where two devices are designed to alternate on and off, such that both are not driving at the same time. The problem MOSFETs have a very high turn off delay, resulting in simultaneous driving. When this occurs, one part can heat up, causing it to fail over time.

Background

The defective MOSFETs are due to a bad production lot from a single vendor. Assemblies that contain a MOSFET that is potentially subject to this failure mode are identified by Serial Number.

Problem Symptoms

The card starts generating OTUk alarms, it will begin to autoreset, and eventually permanently fail.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco recommends replacing hardware potentially impacted by this issue to avoid a field failure.
The impacted Serial Numbers are listed in the Field Notice validation link below.

As of approximately May 22, 2008 new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E091403 are guaranteed to be free of this problem.

To determine the serial number of your ONS 15454-MR-L1-xx.x, or 15454-MRP-L1-xx.x:

Open Cisco Transport Controller.
From the Shelf View, select Inventory
From the Inventory tab, locate the MR-L1-xx.x, or MRP-L1-xx.x cards and compare the information from the Inventory tab against the serial number validation tool.

If you are using TL1 commands.

3. >CANC-USER::
