Cisco 3600 Series Multiservice Platforms

Problem Description

Starting with Cisco IOS Release 12.4(16), some IOS feature set images may no longer fit into available flash memory on Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3640A routers. Customers using the ENTERPRISE PLUS IPSEC 3DES, ENTERPRISE/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 3DES, or ENTERPRISE/SNASW PLUS IPSEC 3DES feature sets on these routers may experience errors while attempting to copy the image onto flash.

The affected images include:

Background

Cisco IOS software image sizes grow incrementally as Cisco continues to enhance the software and add required fixes. Cisco periodically adjusts the minimum flash memory recommendations to accommodate this incremental growth. However, two older Cisco products, the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3640A, have limited flash expansion capability and cannot accommodate the memory requirements of some newer images. These platforms will not support images that exceed their 32MB flash maximum. Also, these platforms may not accommodate other images approaching the 32MB flash limit if additional required files are present in the flash memory. Due to these memory constraints, Cisco will no longer offer the following feature set images for the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3640A products starting with Cisco IOS Release 12.4(16) and beyond:

ENTERPRISE PLUS IPSEC 3DES

ENTERPRISE/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 3DES

ENTERPRISE/SNASW PLUS IPSEC 3DES

Problem Symptoms

The following error will be emitted when trying to copy

images onto flash:

Workaround/Solution

There is no workaround or solution for this issue.

The Cisco 3640 platform will reach End-of-Life in November 2007.

A number of basic feature set images remain available for these platforms in IOS Release 12.4(16) and beyond. Customers are encouraged to use these images, where possible, to support migrations as the Cisco 3600 series hardware platforms near End-of-Life status.

Software and Management Considerations

"End of software maintenance releases" dates previously announced in product bulletins 1920A and 2114 may be affected by IOS image size growth before the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3640A reach End-of-Life. The 32MB Flash limit and the 128 MB DRAM limit on these platforms may force Cisco to discontinue additional feature subset images prior to the announced End-of-Software-Maintenance date. Customers are encouraged to include this possibility in their migration strategy as the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3640A near End-of-Life status. Note, accelerated End-of-Software-Maintenance does not impact the other End-of-Life milestones. These products will continue to receive service and support, as announced, until they reach End-of-Life status.
