Problem Description
There is an initialization issue that may result in partial or total loss of conectivity for packets sourced by the inband, SC0 interface or the MSFC VLAN interfaces. This issue affects Supervisor Engine 32 in Hybrid IOS mode only.
Background
Customers running a Catalyst 6500 with a Supervisor Engine 32, may experience loss of connectivity to or from the SC0 interface of the supervisor and/or the VLAN interfaces of the MSFC. This is caused by a defect in the software initialization routines on this specific supervisor.
Supervisor Engines running in Native IOS mode are not affected by this issue. For software dependencies refer to the individual sections of this Field Notice.
Problem Symptoms
If the customer is running a supervisor image that has this software defect fixed (8.4(3) or later) but is running an MSFC image that is still impacted (earlier than 12.2(17d)SXB9 or earlier than 12.2(18)SXF), the following error message will be displayed:
Error message:
2006 Mar 01 01:06:04 %SYS-1-MOD_MSFC_FAILONLINE:MSFC Module 16 FAILED to come ONLINE 2006 Mar 01 01:06:04 %SYS-1-MOD_MSFC_INCOMPATIBLEIMAGE:MSFC Module 16 Image Upgrade Required to support Inband Port ASIC present in System
If the customer is running a supervisor image that is impacted by this defect (earlier than 8.4(3)) and any MSFC image (impacted or not) no error message will be displayed, although loss of connectivity can be observed.
Workaround/Solution
Upgrade the Supervisor to CATOS release 8.4(3)or later versions, and for MSFC IOS release (also known as Hybrid) to 12.2(17d)SXB9 or 12.2(18)SXF or later versions.
