Problem Description
GSS-4491-K9 units with the serial numbers above will exhibit behavior whereby the surge LED will blink amber after system bootup. This behavior is a result of an improper shutdown procedure during the manufacturing process. This failure in no way impacts the functional operation of the unit.
Background
During the BIOS load process in manufacturing, a procedural step was neglected whereby the operator performs a save and exit. This impacts only the units with the serial numbers detailed in the Serial Numbers section. The procedure is intended to recalculate the BIOS checksum which is compared during the bootup process of the system. The contents of the BIOS is correct, as is the system software resident on the unit.
Problem Symptoms
The problem is seen after boot up. The surge LED, which is normally solid blue, will be blinking amber.
Workaround/Solution
The procedure for a GSS user to update the BIOS checksum from the serial port console would be to do as follows:
-
Press F4 while the system is booting to enter BIOS setup.
-
Use the left or right arrow keys to select the Exit menu tab in the BIOS.
-
Use the down arrow key to select the Load Optimal Defaults entry and press to execute the action.
-
Press to confirm the execution of the Load Optimal Defaults command (Ok).
-
Press to execute the Save Changes and Exit entry.
-
Press to confirm the execution of the Save Changes and Exit command (Ok)
-
The GSS will now reboot and the update is complete.
The above steps need to be executed from a terminal emulation program such as HyperTerm or xterm.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
The GSS-4491 can be identified by running the show version command. The hardware platform will be displayed in the output:
