Problem Description
Any Catalyst 5000 family switch running either a WS-X5540 or WS-X5550 and CatOS 6.4(14) through 6.4(16) may exhibit a System Clock issue.
The show time command displays the following:
0 0000, 00:00:00
Background
System Clock is stuck - show time displays 0 0000, 00:00:00 on a Cat5K running either a WS-X5540 or WS-X5550 and CatOS 6.4(14) through 6.4(16).
Cisco recommends the customer not upgrade to CatOS versions higher than 6.4(13).
If an upgrade is needed, it is necessary to disable NTP. Do not execute the set time command.
A WS-X5530 running the identical CatOS software version seems not to be affected by this issue
Problem Symptoms
System Clock is stuck - show time displays 0 0000, 00:00:00 on a Cat5K running either a WS-X5540 or WS-X5550 and CatOS 6.4(14) through 6.4(16).
Workaround/Solution
Cisco recommends customers not upgrade to CatOS versions 6.4.14 through 6.4.16 when using aWS-X5550 or WS-X5540.
Customers can upgrade to CatOS 6.4(17) if the System Clock issue has not been triggered. CatOS 6.4(17) will prevent this issue from occurring but will not fix the issue if it has already occurred.
Note: If the System Clock issue has already occurred, the Supervisor must be RMAed.
