Problem Description
With CatOS 8.3(1) through 8.3(6) and 8.4(1) images, Sup720-B supervisor boards having newer PFC3B or PFC3BXL daughter boards will not come up. The following error is reported:
SYSTEM_FATAL_ERROR: Earl H/W not supported by S/W
Background
Configuration: 6k(sup720-B) with PFC3B or PFC3BXL board running CatOS image 8.3(1) through 8.3(6) or 8.4(1), the following error is seen on bootup:
System Power On Diagnostics Complete Earl part number: [earl part number] SYSTEM_FATAL_ERROR: Earl H/W not supported by S/W Halting the system.
Note: Before the system gives SYSTEM_FATAL_ERROR, it provides the Earl eeprom number, shown below:
Console: ******** Autoboot executing command: "boot bootflash:cat6000-sup720cvk8.8-4-1.bin" Self decompressing the image : #### [OK] System Power On Diagnostics DRAM Size ..........................256 MB Testing DRAM .......................Passed Verifying Text Segment .............Passed NVRAM Size .........................2048 KB Level2 Cache .......................Present Level3 Cache .......................Present System Power On Diagnostics Complete Earl part number:[earl part number] SYSTEM_FATAL_ERROR: Earl H/W not supported by S/W Halting the system.
On the SUP720 supervisor, if the Earl part number is anything other than:
"73-7373-xx" "73-9070-xx" "73-9382-xx" "73-8931-xx" "73-9629-xx"
The supervisor will not boot.
Problem Symptoms
With CatOS 8.3(1) to 8.3(6) and earlier or 8.4(1) images, Sup720 supervisor boards having newer PFC3 daughter boards may not come up. The following error is reported:
SYSTEM_FATAL_ERROR: Earl H/W not supported by S/W
Workaround/Solution
The issue is fixed in 8.3(7) and 8.4(2) or later images.
