The 15540-CPU utilizes temperature sensors to measure the 15540 system temperature at the air inlet and the air outlet. In some cases these sensors may lock up resulting in incorrect temperature values being reported to the system. If this condition is present, temperature sensor based Minor, Major and Critical alarms may not function properly.
This issue was caused due to a vendor component issue present in earlier versions of the temperature sensor. All products produced beginning in March 2005 are known to be free from this issue. Products produced prior to March 2005 may be affected by this issue if an affected temperature sensor was used.
Differences between the temperature readings of the Active and Standby CPU's or large differences between the temperature readings of the Inlet and Outlet sensors on the same CPU can be indicative of this issue. To determine if the issue is present, customers should perform the screening steps outlined in the How to Identify Hardware Levels section below to determine if they may be impacted.
It may be possible to recover a stuck temperature sensor by removing and reinserting the 15540-CPU or power-cycling the chassis. If this issue is present and you have validated the failure is related to the temperature sensor version, please request an upgrade using the Upgrade Program below.

If the product was manufactured prior to March 1, 2005, you will need to run the show environment command from a system running IOS 12.2(30)S or later to obtain the temperature sensor version "A" or "B" for each CPU in the system.
Note: All "A" version temperature sensors are prone to locking and should be returned for replacement using the Upgrade Form below. All "B" version temperature sensors are known to be free of this issue.
