UBR10K - ESR-PRE-1 with TAN 800-17437-08 A0 |
ESR-PRE-1 used on the ESR-10k platform are not affected. ESR-PRE-1 versions lower than 800-17437-08 A0 are not affected. |
Problem Description
Newer versions of PRE-1 that have a new Texas Instruments bridge chip in the Active or Standby slots may crash immediately after booting the ubr10k.
The following error message will be returned:
%ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-1): Fatal error, PCI retry counter expired GT=0xB4000000, cause=0x00001000, mask=0x00D01D00, real_cause=0x00001000 bus_err_high=0x00000000, bus_err_low=0x00000000, addr_decode_err=0x00000470.
Releases affected:
12.2(15)BC1a/b/c/d
12.2(15)BC2a/b/c
Currently none of the released 12.0 or 12.2 ESR-10K PRE1 images have been found to exhibit the problem demonstrated on the uBR10K.
Background
ESR-PRE-1 contains a PCI bridge chip that reached end-of-life (EOL). The EOL part was replaced with a new part that was to be "form/fit/function" compatible. The new part has a deeper write-FIFO-buffer which increased write latency and can cause a PCI retry counter expired with subsequent reads with certain IOS images. The solution was to increase the PCI retry count in IOS to allow sufficient time for the previous write to complete and to differ the images that do not have the fix.
Problem Symptoms
A uBR10k crashes with the following error code:
%ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-1): Fatal error, PCI retry counter expired GT=0xB4000000, cause=0x00001000, mask=0x00D01D00, real_cause=0x00001000 bus_err_high=0x00000000, bus_err_low=0x00000000, addr_decode_err=0x00000470.
Workaround/Solution
Solution:
Upgrade to an IOS release that has the fix for the TI chip issue.
These IOS releases will have software fixes for the issue:
IOS to 12.2(15)BC1e or higher
IOS to 12.2(15)BC2d or higher
Other Considerations
Cisco has consciously planned not to purge GPS service depots for this field notice. The impact will be small and the Cable MSO target customer is an early adopter of the most recent IOS releases. The BU is expected to actively pursue customers with this information. The field notice has been made external for high customer visibility.

How To Identify Hardware Levels
All ESR-PRE-1 having a Top Assembly Number (TAN) of 800-17437-08 A0 or higher have the new TI Bridge chip and are susceptible to the problem.
The TAN label is on the underside of the ESR-PRE-1 carrier.
