WS-X3500-XL - GigaStack Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC)
Serial Numbers
| Sequential # |

| From FOC0751xxxx to FOC0808xxxx |
Problem Description
The WS-X3500-XL GigaStack Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) is supported by the following platforms:
Catalyst 3550 Series
Catalyst 3500 Series XL
Catalyst 2950G Switches
Catalyst 2924M XL
Catalyst 2912MF XL
When inserting the WS-X3500-XL GBIC into one of these platforms, the GBIC may be damaged to a point where it is unusable.
Background
We identified that the failure rate of the GBIC was higher than expected. It was noted that on all GBICs, the EMI fingers were damaged or crushed during insertion into the chassis. The fingers are the three small metal strips found in the middle of the underside of the GBIC.
The investigation identified the cause as a problem created during the manufacturing process. The problem was subsequently corrected. The serial number range indicated above was identified as the batch of potentially affected devices.
Problem Symptoms
The problem manifests itself in a manner where GBIC will not lock into the guide rail. No connectivity will be possible.
When removing the GBIC, damage to the underside EMI fingers will be visible.
Workaround/Solution
If you have deployed the WS-X3500-XL GBICs, but have not encountered the problem described, there is no action to be taken.
If you have damaged WS-X3500-XL GBICs or are planning to deploy WS-X3500-XL GBICs, the serial number(s) should be verified. If they are within the serial number range shown above, contact the Cisco Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC) by one of the methods shown at the bottom of this Field Notice.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
The serial number of the WS-X3500-XL GBIC is located on the underside of the GBIC. It is in very small characters below the barcode at the bottom of the label.
Prior to contacting Cisco Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC), verify that the serial number of the GBIC is within the range defined above.
