Problem Description
Data-traffic-dependent intermittent bit errors may be seen on the 15530-TSP1-xx12=, 15530-TSP1-xx22=, and 15540-TSP2-xx00= running Functional Image 1.A1 or earlier when transporting 8b10b encoded data streams at 2.125Gigabits per second(Gbps), 2 Gbps Fiber Channel, 2 Gbps fiber connectivity (FICON) and 2 Gbps Intersystem Channel Links Peer Mode ( ISC-3).
Background
This issue was detected on the 2.5 Gbps transponder modules, listed above, while running 2 Gbps Fiber Channel, FICON and other protocols clocked at 2.125Gbps. The issue is seen most for links where utilization is low or link is idling. Errors are dribbling in nature and error rate decreases with increased link utilization. Not all units are affected, and some may show higher error rates than others for similar traffic conditions.
Problem Symptoms
Customer may detect data-traffic-dependent intermittent bit errors when transporting 8b10b encoded data streams at 2.125 Gbps, 2 Gbps Fiber Channel, 2 Gbps FICON and 2 Gbps ISC-3.
Workaround/Solution
This issue has been resolved through an update to the Functional Image of the 15530-TSP1-xx12=, 15530-TSP1-xx22= and 15540-TSP2-xx00=. Customers can download Functional Image Version 1.A3, filename: fi-ons15540-tlcmdb.A.1-A3.exo, from the Software Center on Cisco.com.
Note: The FPGA Image for both the 15530 and 15540 transponders are identical, but can be downloaded from either the 15530 FPGA Software or the 15540 FPGA Software sites listed below.
To update a line card functional image from a flash memory device to a hardware controller, use the following command in privileged EXEC mode from a console session:
15530
reprogram device:filename slot
15540
reprogram device:filename slot subslot
The updated Functional Images can be downloaded from the Software Center on Cisco.com from the ONS 15530 FPGA Software or ONS 15540 FPGA Software links.
Note:Customers are advised that the 1.A3 Functional Image is not compatible with the 1.A1 (or earlier) Functional Image for protocols clocked at 2.125 Gbps. If a 15540-TSP2-xxxx= module is interoperating with the 15540-TSP1-xxxx= or 15530-TSP1-xxxx= module, for protocols clocked at 2.125 Gbps, Functional Image 1.A3, or later, will be required on the 15540-TSP1-xxxx=, 15530-TSP1-xxxx= and 15540-TSP2-xxxx= modules to maintain compatability. When planning your upgrade, be sure to allow for enough time to upgrade both ends of the link during your maintenance window. To reduce service impact, customers may want to coordinate resources to upgrade both ends of the link simultaniously.
The download process must be performed via local console access or local console access through a terminal server. The download process impacts traffic through the line card, so make certain to schedule a maintenance window to avoid unnecessary interruptions to customer traffic. Do not interrupt the download process. Wait for the process to complete before attempting any commands on the switch.
