New Cisco 3745 routers that were manufactured as of June 11th, 2003, are guaranteed to have the incorporated hardware change. |
Problem Description
Cisco has discovered a problem with the AIM-ATM, AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VOICE-30 when two Advanced Integration Modules (AIMs) are configured in a Cisco 3745 Router. This problem will only occur during power-on initialization or reload of the unit and will result in the second AIM module installed in slot 1 not to be recognized by IOS.
This problem is only experienced when two AIM modules are installed in the 3745 in one of the following combinations:
-
TWO AIM-ATM
-
TWO AIM-ATM-VOICE-30
-
TWO AIM-VOICE-30
-
AIM-ATM and AIM-ATM-VOICE-30
-
AIM-ATM and AIM-VOICE-30
-
AIM-ATM and AIM-VPN/HP
-
AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VPN/HP
-
AIM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VPN/HP
-
Any AIM Module and AIM-ATM, AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 or AIM-VOICE-30
This problem can only occur on the platforms or combinations listed in this field notice. Once the router has passed power-on initialization or performed a successful reload and has loaded both installed AIMs it will continue to operate normally, but could fail in the future if the power is cycled or if the Cisco 3745 router is rebooted.
Background
This problem is a result of a signal integrity issue with the AIM-ATM, AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VOICE-30.
This problem can only occur on the platforms or combinations listed in this field notice.
Problem Symptoms
This problem is only experienced during power-on initialization or reload of a Cisco 3745 with two AIM Modules installed and results in the second AIM Module installed in slot 1 not to be recognized by IOS.
The following errors will be recorded upon power up of the router:
Mar 1 00:00:18.495: %ATM_AIM-6-STARTUP: SAR (MXT-5100) initialized %ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-0): Fatal error, PCI Master abort GT=0x24000000, cause=0x0100E483, mask=0x0ED01F00, real_cause=0x00000400 bus_err_high=0x00000000, bus_err_low=0x00000000, addr_decode_err=0x00000470 %ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-0): Fatal error, PCI Master abort GT=0x24000000,cause=0x0100E483, mask=0x0ED01F00, real_cause=0x00000400 bus_err_high=0x00000000,bus_err_low=0x0000000,addr_decode_err=0x00000470 ATM AIM: FPGA verification failed, ID is incorrect. In viewing the show version the system will only display one AIM module installed in the system.

Note: If trying to initialize the unrecognized AIM module could possibly hang or crash the router.
Workaround/Solution
Cisco has implemented a hardware solution to the Cisco 3745 motherboard. The hardware solution will be implemented while an enhancement for the AIM-ATM, AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VOICE-30 is completed.
This field notice will be updated when specific details for the AIM-ATM, AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 and AIM-VOICE-30 enhancement is released. This enhancement will resolve the signal integrity issue.
