Problem Description
An error may occur during power-on initialization which causes the router to lock up. This problem is intermittent.
This problem can only occur with certain router and module combinations which are described below.
On the Cisco 2610, Cisco 2610XM, Cisco 2611, Cisco 2611XM, Cisco 2612, Cisco 2613, Cisco 2620, Cisco 2620XM, Cisco 2621, Cisco 2621XM, Cisco 2650, Cisco 2650XM, Cisco 2651, and Cisco 2651XM platforms, this problem can only occur if the NM-HDA-4FXS module is present along with a module from the Products Affected list above.
On the Cisco 3725, Cisco 3745 and Cisco 2691 platforms, this problem can only occur if one of the following modules is present along with a module from Products Affected list above.
-
AIM-VPN/BP
-
AIM-VPN/HP
-
AIM-VPN/EP
This problem can occur on no other platforms or combinations other than those listed above. Once a router has passed power-on initialization successfully and is in operation it will continue to operate normally, but could fail in the future if the power is cycled.
Background
This problem is a result of a sequencing error which can occur during power-on initialization of the router. This problem has been corrected by a hardware modification to the AIM modules listed in the Products Affected section above.
Problem Symptoms
Router crashes to ROMMON during power-on initialization. Manual intervention is required to bring the router back into operation (power cycling). The following error will be recorded:
System returned to ROM by watchdog timer expired
Workaround/Solution
Replace the affected hardware.
As of approximately February 3, 2003, new products that were manufactured are guaranteed to be free of this problem. Refer to How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the version of in-service product. Product shipped from Service Logistics may still exhibit this problem. Coding RMAs as shown below guarantees a replacement which is not affected by this problem.
