Problem Description

Customers may experience a mild shock when using the Cisco Catalyst 5500 power supply. This problem appears to happen when touching the embedded metal prongs in the AC inlet of the power supply as shown in figure 1.

Background

Cisco Systems discovered a design problem that might affect a small percentage of Catalyst 5500 AC-input power supplies. Potentially affected are AC-input power supplies shipped as spares and with chassis orders between December 1996 and December 1997. If these power supplies are not handled with precaution, a possible mild electric shock may occur. Cisco does not believe that there is a significant risk of harm associated with this design problem. Cisco believes that the current design is safe when handled as described.

Workaround/Solution

Warning: To prevent the possibility of electric shock, please follow these precautions when removing AC power from the Cisco Catalyst 5500.

1. Remove the power cord from the in-house (wall) power outlet receptacle.

2. Turn the power supply switch to the OFF position.

3. Remove the power cord from the AC inlet of the power supply.

Additional precautions for handling AC-input power supplies.

• Do not touch the metal prongs embedded within the AC inlet of the power supply.

• Do not touch the metal prongs on the receptacle end of the power cord if the power cord is connect to the AC-input power supply.

The power supply manufacturer, with technical assistance from Cisco Systems, has implemented a design change to correct the problem. In addition, Cisco will provide replacement AC-input power supplies to any customer upon request. Please use the standard return material authorization (RMA) process for a replacement.
