Problem Description
The Network Analysis Module (NAM) Application Image 1.1(1a) and NAM Maintenance Image 1.1(1a)m are not supported with Catalyst Operating System Release 6.3(2) and later or with Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.1(8a)EX and later.
Background
Initial support for NAM Application Image 1.1(1a) and NAM Maintenance Image 1.1(1a)m is in Catalyst Operating System Release 5.5(1). With the release of NAM Application Image 1.2(1) and NAM Maintenance Image 1.2(1a)m support for 1.1 images was dropped in Catalyst Operating System Release 6.3(2).
Cisco IOS software support for the NAM began with NAM 1.2 for both application and maintenance images. Cisco IOS software does not support NAM 1.1.
Problem Symptoms
If the Supervisor Operating System is upgraded to a release that does not support NAM Application Image 1.1(1a) and NAM Maintenance Image 1.1(1a)m the NAM line card will not come online and will erroneously appear to be faulty. For Catalyst Operating System Software a show module as listed below is indicative of this failure. Note that the NAM in slot 3 shows faulty.

If a NAM with application image 1.1(1a) or 1.1(1a)m is installed in a switch running Cisco IOS Software or integrated to Cisco IOS, the NAM module will not come online and will appear to be experiencing hardware failure. The NAM could be in a state of other, which is the normal state when booting. Rather than coming online after an extended period of time (10-20) minutes, the NAM will transition to Power Shut Down mode.
Workaround/Solution
Solution
Boot to Maintenance Image and upgrade the Application Image to NAM 1.2 or 2.1. For NAMs shipped through April 2001 and running NAM 1.1 Maintenance Image, move the NAM to a switch running a supported release to upgrade the Application and Maintenance Images.
