Some OC48 line cards will not properly detect receive optical carrier when power cycled.
If a line card is powered up with a receive optical signal already present, it may experience this problem. If a line card is powered up and an optical signal is subsequently applied, this problem will not occur. An in-service product that experiences power cycling is at risk for this problem.
The line card fails to detect receive optical carrier, rendering the line card inoperative.
Line cards which exhibit this problem may sucessfully recover normal operation without user intervention after 2-10 minutes.
Line cards will sucessfully recover normal operation with user intervention by executing a microcode reload (if there is no recovery after the first micro-reload repeat the mircro-reload). Use the following command sequence to execute a micro-reload on a line card in slot x.
Router(config)#microcode reload x
As of approximately June 25, 2001, all affected products were being manufactured under deviation D012224 which guarantees they will not exhibit this problem. Refer to the section How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the deviation on an in-service product. Products shipped from logistics may still exhibit this problem at this time.
Customers who wish to proactively replace one or more of their affected products with units which do not exhibit this problem should call the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and request a return materials authorization (RMA) coded ARFN (Administrative Request - Field Notice), referencing this field notice. This forces fulfillment from manufacturing instead of logistics.
Customers who wish to RMA an affected product due to this or some other failure but who want to ensure they receive a replacement which does not exhibit this problem should also request their RMA be coded ARFN, referencing this field notice. Because this forces fulfillment from San Jose, California manufacturing instead of logistics, it may not be possible to meet 2-hour, 4-hour, or next business day service level agreements.
An Engineering Change Order (ECO) is currently being written. Once the ECO is approved, it will be used to initiate a global purge of Service Logistics inventory. A global purge of Service Logistics inventory takes between 6 and 12 months. Once the global purge of Service Logistics inventory has been completed, customers can safely RMA product using Service Logistics inventory (will no longer need to code RMAs ARFN). This field notice will be updated when the global purge of Service Logistics inventory has been completed.
Use the show diag slot command to view the line card deviation and serial number. In the example shown below, the line card was built to deviation D012224 and has a top assembly number (TAN) of 800-5619-01. This line card is within the affected part number range, but is guaranteed not to exhibit this problem because it was manufactured under deviation D012224.

The line card serial number, deviation number, (TAN) and printed circuit board (PCB) assembly number can all be found on stickers which are located on the PCB. Refer to the picture below.
Note: Photo below is not of an OC48E/POS or OC48/SRP line card.
Note: Stickers may not always be in this exact location on the PCB.
The OC48E/POS-SR-FC(=) product is not affected by this problem because it was never manufactured with the defective optical module.

How to Identify Optics ModulesNot all products within the affected serial number range listed in the "Products Affected" section above are susceptible to the symptom described in this field notice. For customers who wish to be more selective in identifying and replacing potentially affected line cards the following information is provided...
OC48E/POS line cards (all types) having optics modules with a silver cover are not susceptible to the symptom described in this field notice. (Note that all OC48E/SRP line cards never used this type of optics module.) The photo below show an example of this type of optics module. A yellow rectangle has been added to the photo to identify the optics module.
Some (not all) optics modules having a black case are susceptible to the symptom described in this field notice. The photo below shows an example of this type of optics module on an OC48E/POS line card. This type of optics module was used on both the OC48E/POS and OC48/SRP line cards. A yellow rectangle has been added to the photo to identify the optics module.
Optics modules having a black case (as shown above) may be susceptible to the symptom described in this field notice if they fall within the affected serial number range shown in the list below. Optics modules having a black case are not susceptible to the symptom described in this field notice if they do not fall within the affected serial number range shown in the list below.

The optical module serial number can be obtained by examining the white sticker on the top of the optics module. The photo below shows an example of this sticker. A yellow rectangle has been added to the photo to identify the serial number.
