Switches with incorrect LEDs were manufactured within the Date Code range of 0449 through 0451. See: How to Identify Date Codes. |
Problem Description
The wrong LEDs were installed in between 1000 and 1500 boards, which were later installed in switches. The incorrect LEDs produce a red light instead of amber when reporting a status mode that is normally reported with an amber light.
The switch features and functions are not affected by the incorrect LEDs and work normally.
Problem Symptoms
The incorrect LEDs produce a Red light instead of Amber:

Workaround/Solution
Replace affected units using the normal return materials authorization (RMA) process.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
Switches with the following Date Codes may have the incorrect LEDs installed:
-
FAA0449
-
FAA0450
-
FAA0451
See the section below on How to Identify Date Codes for further information.
How To Identify Date Codes
Date Codes are integrated into the first seven characters of an eleven-character System Serial Number: FAA0433A275. Date Codes are used to identify the specific time and place a switch was manufactured.
The first three letters are important because these represent the specific manufacturing location. In the following System Serial Numbers:
-
FAB0433A275
-
FAA0433A275
the switch with the FAB SSN was manufactured at a different location than the FAA switch, but during the same year and week (0433). The four subsequent numbers are the year (04) and the week (33) when the switch was manufactured. In the following System Serial Numbers:
-
FAA0430A275
-
FAA0433A275
the switch with the 0430 year and week code was made at the same location and during the same year, but on a different week from the switch with the 0433 year and week code.
Where to Find Serial Numbers
Serial Numbers can be found on
-
The packout box
-
The back of the switch
If the switch is already installed in a network:
-
Telnet to the unit, or establish a direct connection to the switch console. The following switch information will appear, including the System Serial Number.
Enterprise Edition Software Ethernet Address: 00-01-42-68-1D-40 PCA Number: 73-3121-04 PCA Serial Number: FAA044933PS Model Number: WS-C3512-XL-EN System Serial Number: FAA0449W1EE Power Supply S/N: APQ034704ZC PCB Serial Number: FAA044933PS,73-3121-04 ------------------------------------------------- *** Power On Self Test (POST) passed *** *** Failed Test(s): 1 *** Failed Port(s): 3 10 1 user(s) now active on Management Console. User Interface Menu [M] Menus [K] Command Line [I] IP Configuration [P] Console PasswordAnother method is to type the show version command when you telnet into a 3500. A list of information will appear. You can find the serial number at the bottom of the screen:
..........Power supply part number: 34-0851-02 Motherboard serial number: FAA03319K94 Power supply serial number: NONE Model revision number: A0 Model number: WS-C3512-XL-EN System serial number: FAA0449E04Q Configuration register is 0xF....................Another command you can use is the show version | include serial number command. (The | is the bar symbol on the keyboard above the Enter key.) This displays the following information:
Motherboard serial number: FAA04499K94 Power supply serial number: NONE System serial number: FAA0449E04QUse the Date Code to determine if switch is within the Date Code range. (see the section above on How to Identify Date Codes)
