Problem Description
A production shortage of boot flash memory components has forced the substitution of an alternate boot flash component on the C7200-I/O, C7200-I/O-FE, UBR7200-I/O, and UBR7200-I/O-FE controllers. The I/O controllers built with this boot flash component fail to boot with NPE-100, NPE-150, and NPE-200 processors.
Other 7200 processors, NPE-175, NPE-225, NPE-300, NPE-400, and NSE-1 are not affected by the flash component substitution.
Existing C7200-I/O controllers containing the original boot flash components are not affected.
Background
The existing ROMMON (Part Nmber 17-5259-01_A0) on the C7200-I/O-xx and UBR7200-I/O-xx controllers is not compatible with the substitute boot flash component and must be upgraded.NPE-100 and NPE-150 processors do not contain ROMMON, and will function properly with the C7200-I/O-xx and UBR7200-I/O-xx controllers using the substitute flash and upgraded ROMMON(P/N 17-5259-02_A0 or 17-2647-08_A0).
The NPE-200 boots from its own ROMMON. The current NPE-200 ROMMON (Part Number 17-5259-01_A0) is not compatible with the substitute flash component. The NPE-200 cards must be upgraded to the 17-5259-02_A0 ROMMON.
A limited quantity (5500) of C7200-I/O and C7200-I/O-FE I/O (Part Numbers 800-02115-06 and 800-03347-06) controllers, containing the current ROMMON (Part Numbers 17-5259-01_A0) and the substitute boot flash components, were built under deviation number D001870. All of these have a label containing the deviation number near the serial number label on the component side of the controller card. Approximately 2000 of these C7200-I/O-xx controllers do not have the deviation number in the ID PROM, but the remaining 3500 do contain the deviation number in the ID PROM.
C7200-I/O-xx (Part Number 800-02115-06 and 800-03347-06) controllers built under Deviation D001870 are not to be used with 7200 systems containing NPE-100, NPE-150 or NPE-200 processors.
C7200-I/O-xx (Part Numbers 800-02115-06 and 800-03347-06) and UBR7200-I/O-xx (Part Number 800-04608-01 and 800-04317-01) controllers built under Deviation D002122 will not work with NPE-200 processors with current ROMMON (Part Number 17-5259-01_A0).
All new C7200-I/O-xx (Part Numbers 800-02115-08 and 800-03347-08) and UBR7200-I/O-xx (Part Numbers 800-04608-02 and 800-04317-02) controllers with substitute boot flash will not work with NPE-200 processors with current ROMMON (Part Number 17-5259-01_A0).
Problem Symptoms
If boot-up on a 7200 system containing an NPE-100, NPE-150, or NPE-200 and the affected C7200-I/O-xx controller is attempted, the following error messages will be seen:
For the NPE-150 (dir bootflash):
rommon 1 > dir bootflash

Workaround/Solution
If a customer has a C7200-I/O-xx controller marked with the Deviation label D001870 and wishes to use the I/O controller in a 7200 system with an NPE-100 or NPE-150, they will need to obtain an upgraded I/O controller.
If a customer has a C7200-I/O controller with the Deviation label D001870 and wishes to use the I/O controller in a 7200 system with an NPE-200 card, they will need to obtain an upgraded NPE-200.
If a customer has a C7200-I/O-xx controller marked with the Deviation label D002122 and wishes to use the I/O controller in a 7200 system with and NPE-200, they will need to obtain an upgraded NPE-200.
Replacement hardware should be obtained through the regular RMA process.
The table below details the behavior encountered when matching affected I/O controllers with different NPE units.
Table 1: I/O Module Deviation Level Support Matrix
| I/O Controller Deviation | NPE-100 | NPE-150 | NPE-200 With 17-5259-01_A0 or Lower ROMMON | NPE-200 with 17-5259-02_A0 or Higher ROMMON |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D001870 | Fail to Boot | Fail to Boot | Fail to Boot | Fail to Boot |
| D002122 | Boot OK | Boot OK | Fail to Boot | Boot OK |
