Problem Description
Operating these line cards with a release of Cisco IOS® earlier than release 12.0(10)S or 11.2(19)GS5 with multicast enabled can result in all traffic (multicast and unicast) stopping.
Background
On 6/20/00 a new ASIC was cut into production on the 1xOC48 and 4xOC12 POS line cards (see "Products Affected" above). This new ASIC requires a later version of IOS than was previously required for these line cards. If an older version of IOS (earlier than release 12.0(10)S or 11.2(19)GS5) is inadvertently applied to these line cards and multicast traffic is enabled on the line card, all traffic may stop (multicast and unicast).
Problem Symptoms
When multicast traffic is handled by the new TBM6 (Transmit Buffer Manager) ASIC running Cisco IOS earlier than release 12.0(10)S or 11.2(19)GS5, the Multicast Raw Queue (MRQ) gets stuck and no outputs are sent to the neighbor router even though show int counters shows incrementing output packets. Checking the interface on the neighbor router shows that no packets have been received. Unicast traffic is also affected if the MRQ gets stuck.
Workaround/Solution
Customers who have TBM6-equipped line cards can upgrade their IOS to release 12.0(10)S or later, or release 11.2(19)GS5 or later. Customers who are not able to upgrade their IOS should return their cards to Cisco and request a replacement. Replacement line cards shipped under the original product ID after 11/20/00 will be equipped with the TBM4 ASIC (for OC48), or TBM 5 ASIC (for 4xOC12) as shown in the tables below. After 11/20/00, the TBM6 ASIC will ship only on line cards having a new product ID (having a -B suffix) as shown below.

Other Considerations
Returning Product to Cisco
Customers who wish to exchange TBM6-equipped line cards for TBM4-equipped line cards having the same product ID should call the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and request an RMA coded ARFN (Administrative Request - Field Notice), referencing this field notice.
How to Identify ASIC Versions
To check which type of ASIC is on a line card, attach to the line card and type show controllers frfab bma register. A sample is shown below. Look for the string "asic id" followed by a number. The first digit of this number is the version of the TBM ASIC on the card. In the example below, the number is "60F1," corresponding to a TBM6 ASIC.
