Problem Description
The original boot flash memory size on Catalyst 8540 route processors (RPs) was 8MB. Currently released Campus Switch Router (CSR) images, including CSR release 12.0(4a)W5(11a) and 12.0(5)W5(13) fit into the 8MB boot flash single in-line memory module (SIMM). However, the next feature release of CSR images is too large to fit into the 8MB boot flash SIMM. This CSR release is currently slated for the second quarter of 2000.
Background
Initially, the 8MB boot flash SIMM was sufficient because image sizes were only 3MB to 4MB in size. Because the number of features and linecards is increasing, the image size has grown beyond 8MB.
Problem Symptoms
To check if your system has a 16MB boot flash SIMM, enter the show hardware EXEC command. The part number for the Catalyst 8540 CSR RPs with a default 16MB boot flash SIMM is shown below:
73-3775-03 Rev. A0
You can also issue a show version command to determine if your system has a 16MB boot flash SIMM. An example is shown below:

Configuration register is 0x2002 C8540#
A copy error results if the image size is too large for the boot flash SIMM.
Workaround/Solution
If you have an 8MB boot flash SIMM and have no additional memory installed, we recommend that you order a spare Flash PC card programmed with the latest version of the system image, part number MEM-8540C-FLC20M=.
