Catalyst 5000 Fiber Token Ring Switching Module (16 port) |
-D0 |
Problem Description
The Catalyst 5000 Supervisor card resets when the Fiber Token Ring Module is inserted into the chassis. The problem occurs during the process of installation of the module; it does not occur during normal operation.
When removing the Fiber Token Ring Module, the console will display the incorrect slot number of the module being removed. This is purely a cosmetic issue, and does not affect the Supervisor card or any other cards installed.
Background
This problem occurs in the following Fiber Token Ring Module:
WS-X5031 rev D0 Hardware version 1.4 Part number 73-2612-06 rev A0
Problem Symptoms
The user will experience a connectivity failure when the Supervisor resets.
If the system does not reset, the Supervisor card and the chassis will not be fully populated with the correct system information.
As an example, when installing and subsequently removing a Fiber Token Ring Module from slot 2 of the Catalyst 5000, the following messages appear in the console:
Insertion into slot 2:
Module 2 has been inserted.
Removal from slot 2:
Module 4 has been inserted.
Module 4 has been removed.
Workaround/Solution
To workaround the problem, the Fiber Token Ring module insertion should occur during a scheduled downtime period. After insertion, the Catalyst 5000 should be reset to ensure that the correct information is populated to the Supervisor card.
This problem has been resolved with the release of the following Fiber Token Ring Module:
WS-X5031 rev E0 Hardware version 1.5 Part number 73-2612-07 rev A0
