Problem Description |
All 12.0-based Cisco IOS releases, including but not limited to 12.0T and 12.0XJ, require more run-time DRAM than is available on a HMM modem carrier card with 16MB of DRAM.
Problem Symptoms |
Running Cisco IOS 12.0-based releases on 16MB DRAM HMM cards may prevent the HMM card from coming up or may cause the card to run out of memory and crash unexpectedly.
Background |
New functionality introduced into Cisco IOS 12.0-based releases has resulted in the run-time memory requirements nearing or exceeding 16MB; therefore, cards containing only 16MB of DRAM do not have the necessary memory for the image and processing.
Workaround/Solution |
Customers may request MEM-NPE-32MB= using the RMA process. MEM-NPE-32MB= contains two 16MB SIMMs which should be used to replace the existing 8MB SIMMs on the HMM card.
To upgrade the card, follow the proper OIR procedures for the card, remove the two 8MB SIMMs, replace them with the 16MB SIMMs, and reinstall the card. |

How To Identify Hardware Levels |
To determine if the HMM contains 16MB or 32MB of DRAM, Telnet to the router shelf and issue the following command:
router_shelf#execute-on slot show ver An example is below: router_shelf#execute-on slot 6 show ver The output will contain a line similar to the following: cisco c5800 (R4K) processor with 49152K/16384K bytes of memory. Add the two numbers together to get the total board memory. Only 16MB boards should be upgraded. |
