Problem Description
The following problems have been associated with clocking issues on RPs for Catalyst 8540CSRs and Catalyst 8540MSRs:
-
The CPU hangs while booting.
-
The CPU has exception while booting.
-
There is exception during normal operation.
-
All protocols stop working (for example, Service Specific Connection Oriented Protocol (SSCOP) will go to idle, Private Network-Network Interface (PNNI) will go to one-way-in, and so on).
Background
During the debugging of failed RPs, a deficiency was found in an oscillator circuit component. This has been rectified and purged from inventories.
Problem Symptoms
These problems and symptoms are due to the VCXO problem on the CPU.
These are known symptoms attributed to the CPU clock problem:
-
The CPU hangs while booting.
This usually happens when the CPU is booting a Cisco IOS software image. It rarely happens when booting ROMMON. It gets to a point, stops sending any output to the console port, and does not respond to the console port. The CPU may or may not respond to the RESET (NMI) button on the front panel.
-
The CPU has exception while booting.
This can occur when booting ROMMON or Cisco IOS software. The CPU may go into a boot, exception, reboot loop, or a boot, and then have continuous exceptions.
-
There may be an exception or bad address in the range.

-
All protocols stop working (for example, SSCOP will go to idle, PNNI will go to one-way-in, and so on).
Workaround/Solution
All MSR RPs earlier than revision 5.7 must be replaced to avoid these problems. All CSR RPs earlier than revision 5.6 and all revision 5.6 RPs listed in the Affected Serial Numbers section of this Field Notice must be replaced to avoid these problems. Follow the procedure listed below to get the RPs replaced.
To order replacement RPs, request a return materials authorization (RMA) from the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), referencing this field notice.
Use the show hardware command to get the hardware revision and serial number.
