Cisco 6400 node route processor (NRP) Rev. 4 |
Hardware revision change on the node route processor and Cisco IOS compatibility |
Problem Description
The hardware Rev. 4 NRP is not backward-compatible to previous Cisco IOS releases for the NRP. NRP hardware Rev. 4 requires Cisco IOS software release 11.3(8)DB1 or later. The older hardware NRP revisions (Rev. 3) are forward-compatible to Cisco IOS 11.3(8)DB1 and later.
Background
A board modification was made to increase the manufacturability of the NRP. The modification involved removing components that the previous NRP Cisco IOS releases still look for. Cisco IOS 11.3(8)DB1 corrects this; however, all previous releases of Cisco IOS that look for the NRP will not work on the new hardware Rev. 4 board. The Cisco 11.3(5)DB and 11.3(7)DB releases are affected (all previous supported NRP releases).
Problem Symptoms
Rev. 4 NRP will not work with any Cisco IOS releases earlier than 11.3(8)DB1. The following error will occur if a Rev. 4 board is loaded with a Cisco IOS release earlier than 11.3(8)DB1.
A screen capture and/or log file will appear if you are running a Rev. 4 NRP and pre-11.3(8)DB1 software.
Note: The %ERR-1-FATAL: Failed to init SRAM PCI FPGA line indicates the failure.

Workaround/Solution
If you encounter an NRP RMA that is failing to load, check the hardware revision of the NRPs against the Cisco IOS version you are attempting to bring it up on. If any of the NRPs are Rev. 4, upgrade to Cisco IOS 11.3(8)DB1 or later on all NRPs in the chassis.
Although it is not a requirement to have non-redundant Rev. 3 boards run the same version as the Rev. 4, it is highly recommended that all NRPs be using the same Cisco IOS release. Redundant NRPs are required to run the same Cisco IOS release.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
To determine the hardware version of the NRP, look at the Part Number label affixed to the card:
NRP version 3 = 800-03655-03
NRP version 4 = 800-03655-04
To determine the board hardware version, refer to the show nrp command output. Look for the Hardware revision 4.255 message indicating Rev. 4 and the Hardware revision 3.22 message indicating Rev. 3.
Following is sample output of the show nrp command for Rev. 3:
