Main Line Summary

Description

 Cisco IOS® Software 9.x releases were introduced in December 1992 and have all reached end of sale (EOS) and end of life (EOL). Prior to Cisco IOS Software Release 9.x, there was Cisco Software Release 8.x. Among these releases, Cisco IOS Software Release 8.3 was particularly important in terms of innovation and features. Cisco IOS Software Release 8.3 migrated to Cisco Software Release 9.1, which first customer shipped (FCS) in December 1992.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 9.1 was a main line release that supported all existing Cisco platforms.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 9.14 was based on Cisco IOS 9.1 and introduced support for Access Servers (4000, 3000, and other low range access routers).
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 9.17 was based on Cisco IOS 9.1 and runs parallel with Cisco IOS 9.14, but supported only the high-end routers (Cisco 7000, AGS/AGS+).
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 9.21 unifies Cisco IOS 9.14 and 9.17 to create a main line with support for all existing Cisco platforms.

 Cisco Systems, Inc. released Cisco IOS Software for all active platforms.

Product/Feature Integration

 In addition to defect fixes, successive maintenance releases from Cisco IOS Software Releases 8.3 to Cisco IOS 10.3(x) delivered support for new functionality and new hardware. For more information, see the Feature Matrix from 10.3 to 12.1.

Maintenance Releases

 Cisco IOS 8.x, 9.x, and 10.x have reached EOL.

Interim Builds

 Interim builds are not recommended and are not fully tested. Customers will only be provided with interim builds when a critical defect renders the maintenance release unusable.

Recommended Migration

 If currently using Cisco IOS 9.x, the recommended upgrade path is Cisco IOS Software Release 10.3(x) for AGSs and Cisco IOS 11.2(x) for all others. For more information, see the following pages:

The migration path is the logical superseding software. The uniqueness of each network requires that customers verify support for hardware, features, and protocols prior to a massive network upgrade.

Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliant

 Cisco IOS Software 9.x releases have not been certified as Y2K compliant.

General Deployment (GD) Plan

 There was no GD certification for the Cisco IOS Software 9.x releases.

 Cisco IOS Software Release 9.x has reached EOL.
