Introduction
This document describes how to use the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) erase code (750erase.hex or 760erase.hex) in order to recovery the password on the Cisco 700 Series Routers. This document describes the procedures for Microsoft Windows 3.1x and for Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Choose the appropriate Terminal Emulation Package.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Step-by-Step Procedures
Password Recovery
Complete these steps in order to recover the password:

Power cycle the router. While it boots, press the Esc key a few times.
This action puts the unit into a software load mode. The unit responds with this prompt:
Ready to upload new firmware into flash. Baud (1=19.2K, 2=2400, 3=38.4K, 9=9600)?

Select the baud rate for the transfer. (This example uses 9600 baud.)
The unit responds with this prompt:
Begin ascii upload at 8n1/9600 baud.

Start the ASCII file transfer of the image.

Use the 750erase.hex image for the 750 Series Routers.

Use the 760erase.hex image for the 760 and 770 Series Routers.
Note: Right-click the appropriate link, and choose Save Target As in order to save the image to your computer.
These files are not interchangeable. You must treat them as text files when they are loaded onto the unit through the console port. At 9600 bps, the transfer takes approximately 12 minutes. While the transfer occurs, the LINE LED flashes rapidly. When the transfer is complete, the unit responds with these prompts and then reboots:
Firmware transfer successful. Now writing firmware into FLASH, standby ... Firmware upload complete. Erase Version of 750/760 firmware. This will erase all configured parameters ERASING NVRAM... !--- The unit reboots. Ready to upload new firmware into flash. Baud (1=19.2K, 2=2400, 3=38.4K, 9=9600)?

Reload the original software, and repeat Step 2.
Text or ASCII File Transfer for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP HyperTerminal
Complete these steps in order to transfer a text or ASCII file with a Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP HyperTerminal session:

Within the HyperTerminal application, choose File > Properties.

Choose the Settings tab, and then click ASCII Setup.
The ASCII Setup dialog box appears.

Check the Send line ends with line feeds check box.

Enter 0 (zero) in the Line Delay and Character Delay fields.

Click OK in order to close the ASCII Setup dialog box, and then click OK in order to return to the HyperTerminal application.

Close and then restart the HyperTerminal application.

Choose Transfer > Send Text File.

Select the file that you want to transfer, and click OK.
The file is transferred to the unit. As the file is transferred, the LINE LED on the front of the unit flashes rapidly. This LED may be the only indication that the transfer process is in progress.
Text or ASCII File Transfer for Windows 3.1 Terminal
Complete these steps in order to transfer a text or ASCII file with a Windows 3.1 terminal:

Choose Settings > Text Transfers.

Choose Standard Flow Control, and click OK.

Choose Transfer > Send Text File.

Select the file that you want to transfer, and click OK.

Ensure that the Append LF and Strip LF check boxes are not checked.

Click OK.
The file is transferred to the unit. As the file is transferred, the LINE LED on the front of the unit flashes rapidly. This LED may be the only indication that the transfer process is in progress.
