PA-A1 ATM Port Adapter


The PA-A1 ATM Port Adapter is the first of a new generation of ATM interface modules for Cisco® 7200 and 7500 series routers.

Based on industry-leading port adapter technology, the PA-A1 ATM port adapter is a standards-based ATM interface that combines state-of-the-art performance with networking flexibility and investment protection, providing customers with one of the most cost-effective, yet powerful, ATM solutions in the industry.

The PA-A1 ATM port adapter is supported on any of the Cisco 7200 or VIP2-based 7500 series routers, and interoperates with any UNI-compliant ATM device. The PA-A1 ATM port adapter converts non-ATM LAN traffic into ATM cells and transmits to an ATM switch at rates up to 155 Mbps.

The PA-A1 ATM port adapter supports large enterprise and private ATM network configurations for data/bandwidth-intensive applications where traffic shaping is not required. Combined with both Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) software services and the robust suite of legacy-protocols supported on Cisco 7200 and 7500 series routers, the PA-A1 ATM port adapter can support large virtual private networks (VPNs).

Standards-based ATM Interface

Standards-based interfaces ensure long-term interoperability with other standards-compliant ATM devices in the network. Important standards implemented in the ATM port adapter include UNI 3.0/3.1, ATM adaptation layer 5 (AAL5) and unspecified bit rate (UBR) service category for the transport of data traffic, RFC 1483 and 1577 for LAN internetworking, and ATM Forum F4 and F5 OAM flows for performance/fault monitoring.




High-Performance Data Transmission

The ATM port adapter can support up to OC-3 line speeds (155 Mbps) and has been tested in a Cisco 7500 configuration at over 150,000 64 byte packets per second transmissions speeds with no packets dropped. In addition, the ATM port adapter supports the equivalent of 512 SARs, over 2000 virtual connections (either PVC or SVC) from up to 256 VLANs.

Optimized for Virtual Private ATM Networks

The ATM port adapter is designed for customers who require increased transmission performance (compared to HSSI or FDDI) for "bursty" LAN traffic over private (that is customer controlled or owned) transmission lines.

Advanced Cisco Port Adapter Architecture for Cisco 7200 and 7500 Series Routers

The ATM port adapter is based on standard port adapter technology, enabling maximum flexibility and investment protection for Cisco 7200 and 7500 customers. The Cisco port adapter architecture provides important benefits in a LAN ATM network, including online insertion in Cisco 7200 platforms, reduced expense per interface module, increased reliability/availability/serviceability, higher port density, and improved overall performance.

Fully Integrated Cisco IOS Support

The ATM port adapter utilizes the full range of ATM features found in Cisco IOS software, the advanced software infrastructure that integrates Cisco products. Beyond the ATM feature set currently supported by Cisco IOS software (including ATM LANE, UNI, LAN Internetworking, etc.), ongoing ATM enhancements to Cisco IOS represent a major benefit enabling ATM port adapter customers to stay up-to-date with the ATM standard without changing hardware modules.

  • Single wide, native-ATM port adapter available on both Cisco 7200 and 7500 series routers

  • SONET/SDH OC-3c/STM-1 155-Mbps, two product versions:

    • Multimode fiber, SC duplex connector, up to three km (product number: PA-A1-OC3MM)

    • Single-mode fiber - intermediate reach, SC connectors, up to 15 km (product number: PA-A1-OC3SM)

  • Supports ATM Forum Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI) for address prefix acquisition and ATM service address registration with UNI-compliant switches throughout the ATM network

  • Full SNMP agent and support for the IETF RFC 1213 interface MIB and future support for ATM MIB specifications

    • ATM Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI)

LED Indicators

  • Enabled LED, to indicate that the ATM port adapter is ready for operation
