Introduction

This document provides a sample configuration for network boot on the Cisco CSS 11000 Series Content Services Switch.

The information in this document is based on Cisco CSS 11000 Series Content Services Switches.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Configure

In this section, you are presented with the information to configure the features described in this document.

Note: Use the Command Lookup Tool ( registered customers only) in order to obtain more information on the commands used in this section.

Network boot uses a special zip version of WebNS that ends with the .zip extension, not the adi.gz extension. This special zip version is on the CSS 11000 CD. In order to obtain the latest version, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

You must complete these steps in order to use the special zip version of WebNS:

1. Copy the zip image to your FTP server and unzip it.

   A directory named hdd is created that contains the boot files.

2. Store the CSS 11000 configuration on the FTP server.

   You do not need to store the configuration in the same directory as the image, but it must be on the same FTP server.

Network boot works from the management port only, so make sure you have connectivity from the CSS 11000 management port to the FTP server. The management port must be configured in a unique subnet from subnets used in the running configuration. The output provides an example of how to configure the management port:

CS-150(config)# boot
CS-150(config-boot)# ip address 10.20.1.1
%% System must be rebooted for IP address to take effect
CS-150(config-boot)# subnet mask 255.255.0.0
CS-150(config-boot)# gateway address 10.20.1.255

For the change to take effect, reboot the device.

In order to configure network boot, complete these steps:

1. Access the Offline Diagnostic Monitor.

   In order to access the Offline Diagnostic Monitor, reboot the device, and press any key once this message displays:

2. Choose option 1* Set Boot Configuration.

   3*  Advanced Options
   4* Reboot System

3. Choose option 1. Set Primary Boot Configuration.

   Enter a menu number:
   1. Set Primary Boot Configuration
   2. Set Secondary Boot Configuration
   3. Set IP Address, and Subnet Mask
   r. Return to previous menu

   You can configure network boot to be your primary boot method, or you can configure network boot to be your secondary boot type in case of a hard drive failure.

   Configuring PRIMARY Boot Record
   Boot via [N]etwork, [F]TP, [D]isk, or [C]lear: [N] n
   Enter the FTP Kernel path: [ ] /ftproot/hdd
   Enter FTP Server's IP address: [ ] 10.20.1.2
   Enter FTP Server authentication username: [ ] anonymous
   Enter FTP Server authentication password: [ ] xyx@cisco.com
   Enter the FTP Config Path: [] /ftproot
   Press <Enter> to continue...

4. Choose N for network boot, and enter this information:

   • The path to the WebNS image and configuration

   • The IP address of the FTP server

   • Your FTP server username and password

5. Choose option r in order to exit the Offline Diagnostic Monitor.

   2. Set Secondary Boot Configuration
   3. Set IP Address, and Subnet Mask
   r. Return to previous menu

6. Choose option 4. Reboot System in order to reboot the device, and then press y in order to confirm that you want to reboot the device.

Verify

Use this section to confirm that your configuration works properly.

The Output Interpreter Tool ( registered customers only) (OIT) supports certain show commands. Use the OIT to view an analysis of show command output.

After the CSS 11000 reboots, log in and verify that the correct version of code is running. Issue these commands in order to verify the configuration:

• show running-config - Displays the list of configuration commands that modify the system's default configuration.

• show startup-config - Displays the contents of NVRAM and shows the configuration file pointed to by the CONFIG_FILE environment variable.
