Introduction

This document contains frequently asked questions about the asymmetric digital sbscriber line (ADSL) WAN Interface Card (WIC) used in the Cisco 1700, 2600, and 3600 series routers.

The Cisco 1700, 2600, and 3600 and 3700 platforms are configured essentially the same, however there are differences in the hardware and in the required Cisco IOS® Software Release.

This table provides platform support details. All the WICs are supported both in onboard WIC slots and in the WIC carrier cards (NM-2W, NM-xFE2W, NM-xFE2W-V2, and NM-1FE1R2W) slots.

Note: WIC-1ADSL-I-DG and WIC-1ADSL-DG are not supported on Cisco 2610-50 (non-XM) Series and 3600 routers.

Q. Is there a interoperability table for the different types of (ADSL) WICs?

A. ADSL over POTS WIC:

  • Alcatel ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM) 1000 and 7300

  • Cisco 6000 Series DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAMs)

  • Lucent Stinger (24-port and 48-port linecards)

  • ECI HiFOCuS (ADI 918 and ADI 930 linecards)

ADSL over POTS WIC with Dying Gasp:

  • Alcatel ASAM 1000 and 7300

  • Cisco 6000 Series DSLAMs

  • Lucent Stinger (24-port and 48-port linecards)

  • ECI HiFOCuS (ADI 918 and 930 linecards)—fourth quarter calendar year 2003

ADSL over ISDN WIC:

Q. What are the software requirements and limitations for the ADSL WIC?

A. The ADSL feature is supported in the IP/ADSL Image ("y7" image) for the Cisco 1700 Series. The Cisco 2600/3600/3700 series routers require a PLUS Cisco IOS Software image for ADSL if version 12.2T is in use. From Cisco IOS Software Release12.3 mainline and later, ADSL WIC support is available in the "IP Base" feature set. Some Quality of Service (QoS) features require an advanced image (IP PLUS, IP VOICE, or later) for Cisco 1700/2600/3600/3700 series router support.

The ADSL over POTS WIC (WIC-1ADSL), is available on the Cisco IOS 12.2(13)T Release for the Cisco 1700/2600/ 3600/3700 series routers.

The ADSL over POTS WIC with Dying Gasp Support (WIC-1ADSL-DG) is available on Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(15)ZL for the 1700 Series. This release merges into the third release of the Cisco IOS Software12.3T train in the first calendar quarter of 2004. The WIC-1ADSL-DG is first available on the Cisco IOS Release 12.3(4)XD for the Cisco 2600XM, 2691, and 3700 Series and is supported in the third release of the 12.3T software train as of 2004.

The ADSL over ISDN WIC (WIC-1ADSL-I-DG) is available on the Cisco IOS Software version 12.2(13)ZH for the Cisco 1700 series and will be available on Cisco IOS Software version 12.2(15)ZJ for the Cisco 2600XM, 2691, and 3700 series routers. All WIC-1ADSL-I-DG features in 12.2(13)ZH and 12.2(15)ZJ is supported in the second release of the Cisco IOS Software 12.3T train (available in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2003). This date is subject to change. Q. What is the best practice before you deploy an ADSL WIC card?

A. Follow these procedures to determine the Cisco IOS software release you run:

  1. Log in to the Cisco 1700, 2600, or 3600.
  2. Issue the show version command and press Enter. The amount of memory installed is displayed. This example shows the result when you issue the show version command on a Cisco 1700 series.

Q. How much memory is installed in my Cisco router?

A. To find out the amount of memory in your router, follow this procedure.

  1. Log in to the Cisco 1700, 2600, or 3600.
  2. Issue the show version command and press Enter. The amount of memory installed is displayed, as shown in these examples.

Q. What type of cable should I order when I order the ADSL WIC?

A. The ADSL WIC ships with the straight-through RJ-11-to-RJ-11 cable typically used by new installation customers that do not have an external splitter. Customers that have an external splitter should order the crossover cable. When you order this cable, use product ID "CAB-ADSL-RJ11X=".

Note: If you connect an ADSL WIC to an RJ-11 wall jack that has the DSL pair wired for pins 2 and 5, you must use an RJ-11 crossover cable (lavender with blue stripe).

Q. How do I troubleshoot my new ADSL connection?

A. Verify with your public telephone company or Internet Service Provider (ISP) that the ADSL signal type is Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) Issue 2 and that the ISP in use is an Alcatel or Cisco Systems compliant DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM).
