PA-8B-S/T port adaptors within the above noted serial number range, having a top assembly number (TAN) of 800-02060-04 and Printed Circuit Assembly (PCA) number of 73-2194-04, may experience anomalous behavior. This behavior can include a line protocol failure while the ISDN BRI link is up or a system crash.
The failures encountered are due to a hardware problem on the affected version of the PA-8B-S/T port adaptor. It has been determined that the field programmable gate array (FPGA) firmware resident on the affected PA-8B-S/T port adaptors has a defect resulting in an invalid PCI cycle. This issue will require that the affected PA-8B-S/T port adapter be replaced. PA-8B-S/T FPGA code is not field upgradeable.
Refer to the How to Identify Hardware Levels and Workaround/Solution sections to determine the required corrective action.
Various failures have been reported on one (1) specific TAN and PCA version (73-2194-04, 800-02060-04) of the PA-8B-S/T port adaptor. These failures can range from ISDN line protocol failures to a system crash. It has been determined that the field programmable gate array (FPGA) firmware resident on the affected PA-8B-S/T port adaptors has a defect resulting in an invalid PCI cycle. This issue will require replacement of the affected port adaptor for a replacement unit with updated FPGA firmware. PA-8B-S/T FPGA code is not field upgradeable.
System Crash Example
An example of a 7200 series router encountering a system crash as the result of a suspect PA-8B-S/T port adaptor is as follows:
%ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-0): Fatal error, Parity error on master read
GT=0xB4000000, cause=0x0110E083, mask=0x0ED01F00, real_cause=0x00100000
bus_err_high=0x00000000, bus_err_low=0x00000000, addr_decode_err=0x00000470
%ERR-1-FATAL: Fatal error interrupt, No reloading
err_stat=0x1, err_enable=0xFF, mgmt_event=0x10000040
Line Protocol Failure Example
An example of a 7200 series router encountering a line protocol failure as the result of a suspect PA-8B-S/T port adaptor is as follows. Note that the BRI line physical layer will be reported as "up" with the higher-layer ISDN protocol "down".

There is no available workaround for the issues identified in this field notice. The solution is to replace the affected hardware.
As of approximately June 14, 2006, new products that were manufactured under deviation D085021 are guaranteed to be free of this problem and are not included within list of affected serial numbers. Refer to How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the serial number and deviation number of an in-service product.
Note: Products that fall within the serial number range listed above are not affected by this problem if they have deviation D085021 or ECO E086306 applied.
Cisco recommends a fix-on-fail strategy for this problem.
Although an upgrade program had previously been provided to replace potentially affected but otherwise working product, the upgrade program is now over and Cisco will only replace product which has actually failed. The standard RMA process should be used to replace failed product.

How To Identify Hardware Levels
PA-8B-S/T units manufactured between 08-FEB-2006 and 14-JUN-2006, with a part number of 73-2194-04, are potentially affected by the issues identified in this field notice.
The affected units are specifically bounded by the serial numbers identified within the serial number validation tool below:
serial number validation tool for PA-8B-S/T.
PA-8B-S/T units not identified within the serial numbers validation tool are NOT affected by the issues identified within this field notice. A manufacturing deviation (D085021) was implemented between 14-JUN-2006 and 06-JUL-2006 to allow shipment of PA-8B-S/T units with updated FPGA code. PA-8B-S/T units shipped under deviation D085021 are NOT affected by the issues identified in this field notice.
The following command line interface (CLI) screenshot shows an example of an affected PA-8B-S/T unit. Note the Serial number and Part number identification within the CLI output.
