Cisco partners with Rio City Hall to expand Rio Operations Center

The Mobile Unit COR (UM-COR) - a remote unit powered by Cisco’s Instant Connect technology – was unveiled last month as part of the Rio Operations Center for use during emergencies and large-scale events. Part of Cisco’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy to Brazil as a supporter of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the solution includes high-quality integrated voice, video and data communications solution and creates a Hot Spot Wi-Fi access for civilians around the area. The equipment will be able to connect with COR agents anywhere in the city, instantly, reliably and securely.

"For the first time, a Brazilian city will have an integrated technology solution with the capability to remotely plan and execute operations, even in locations where communications may be restricted for any reason,” said Nina Lualdi, Cisco Innovation Senior Director, Latin America. “Cisco’s equipment will provide network infrastructure, video monitoring and voice services that allow integrated communications between agents in an instant, safe and simple way whether they are connected through radio, mobile or landline. Its compact nature makes it easy to rapidly transport it to the scene of the event.”

Rio Operations Center (COR) has become a key component in terms of integration of government agencies and technology to better manage the city. The UM-COR technology will allow essential parties to communicate more quickly and accurately, and in turn make faster and better decisions.

“Users can simultaneously access the internet, make phone calls and teleconferences via IP phones, and also integrate to radio networks and cell phones. The integrated camera is able to capture and send real-time images to the COR. It enables a much more accurate assessment of the situation in the place,” said Pedro Junqueira, Executive Chief, Rio Operations Center. “In addition to the Olympic Games, the technology is expected to help manage a variety of critical events in Rio de Janeiro and emergency crisis situations.”

COR has been utilizing Cisco technology since its creation in December 2010 and was responsible for the the installation of COR’s telephone and Telepresence systems, as well as for connecting the Center’s crisis room, the Civilian Defense headquarters, and the Mayor’s official residence.

The UM-COR launch occurred during the Olympic marathon test event, held in Rio on April 10.
