Starting in November 2012, Cisco began shipping updated Cisco VXC 6215 hardware loaded with a new revision of the 8.7 firmware. The new revision of 8.7 firmware is required to support the updated hardware, but introduces no new functionality. The new 8.7 firmware build (66.05) provides feature parity with the previous 8.7 firmware build (66.04). The following table provides a comparison of the old and new versions:
Table 1 Cisco VXC 6215 Hardware Versions
||Part TAN (Pull tab at rear of device to view)
||Default 8.7 Firmware Build Loaded on the Device
||Hardware Security Key *1
|Pre-Nov 2012 Hardware
|Post-Nov 2012 Hardware
*To determine the hardware security key, open a terminal and execucte:
/usr/sbin/dmidecode --type 11 | grep "String 5" | cut -d ' ' -f 3
Older Cisco VXC 6215 devices with the -02 part TAN support base image version 66.04, while newer Cisco VXC 6215 devices with the -03 part TAN support base image version 66.05.
In addition, the new -03 hardware cannot run the Firmware Release 8.6 build (version Cisco1.0.1-245-W11.1.057.04).
Do not deploy image versions 57.04 or 66.04 to the -03 devices. If an older image is loaded on a -03 device, the HAgent cannot properly identify the hardware, and the device will become unmanageable and require manual recovery.
In order to prevent device errors, you can create a DDC to upgrade all your devices to Firmware Release 9.0, which supports both the -02 and -03 hardware revisions (see the Administration Guide for Cisco Virtualization Experience Client 6215 Firmware Release 9.0).
If you cannot upgrade to Firmware Release 9.0, you must configure DDC packages on the Cisco VXC Manager so that each firmware build is assigned a dedicated DDC setting. Cisco also recommends that you upgrade any devices running the 57.04 build to the 66.04 build. The recommended packages are as follows:
A 57.04 package to upgrade devices running the 57.04 image (if any) to build 66.04, as well as apply the required INI settings and install any desired add-ons.
A 66.04 package to ensure devices running the 66.04 image continue to run that image, as well as apply the required INI settings and install any desired add-ons. The 66.04 image is not required as part of the 66.04 package, however, you can include it if desired.
A 66.05 package to ensure devices running the 66.05 image continue to run that image, as well as apply the required INI settings and install any desired add-ons. The 66.05 image is not required as part of the 66.05 package, however, you must ensure that the package does not include the 57.04 or 66.04 image versions.
All Firmware Release 8.7 add-ons are supported on both the 66.04 and 66.05 builds.
