NoteRefer to the Cisco 7600 Series Router Installation Guide for ESD details, including the locations of the ESD connectors on the Cisco 7600 series routers.
Safety Overview
Safety warnings appear throughout this publication in procedures that may harm you if performed incorrectly. A warning symbol precedes each warning statement.
WarningOnly trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install, replace, or service this equipment.
WarningBefore you install, operate, or service the system, read the Site Preparation and Safety Guide. This guide contains important safety information you should know before working with the system.
WarningDuring this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.
Checking the Clock Module
To verify the status of the clock module on systems running Cisco IOS software, enter the show environment status command.
This example shows how to check the status of the clock module on a Cisco 7600 series router running Cisco IOS software:
Router> show environment statusbackplane:operating clock count:2fan-tray 1:fan-tray 1 fan-fail:OKclock 1:clock 1 OK:not OK, clock 1 clock-inuse:not-in-useclock 2:clock 2 OK:OK, clock 2 clock-inuse:in-use...Router>The above example shows a failure with clock 1 (clock module A).
NoteClock module A refers to clock 1 and clock module B refers to clock 2.
NoteThe clock module on a Cisco 7609 router or on a Catalyst 6509-NEBS-A switch contains dual redundant clocks (clock 1 and clock 2) on one module.
Replacing the Clock Module
NoteYou must remove all power from the Cisco 7600 series router before replacing the clock module.
WarningThis unit might have more than one power supply connection. All connections must be removed to de-energize the unit.
The clock module is installed as follows:
•
Behind power supply 1 (the lower power supply) on the Cisco 7603 router or Catalyst 6503 switch (see Figure 1)
•
Behind power supply 1 (the lower power supply) on the Cisco 7604 router or Catalyst 6504 switch (see Figure 2)
•
Behind power supply 2 (the upper power supply) for the Cisco 7606 router (see Figure 3)
•
At the rear of the cabinet (the upper half) on the Cisco 7609 router or Catalyst 6509-NEBS-A switch (see Figure 4)

Replacing the Clock Module on a Cisco 7603 Router, a Cisco 7604 Router, a Cisco 7606 Router, a Catalyst 6503 Switch, or a Catalyst 6504 Switch
To replace the clock module on a Cisco 7603 router, a Cisco 7604 router, a Cisco 7606 router, a Catalyst 6503 switch or a Catalyst 6504 switch, perform these steps:
NoteYou must remove all power from the Cisco 7600 series router before replacing the clock module.
Step 1
Power down the router as follows:
a.
For a DC power supply, power down the router, verify that power is off to the DC circuit connected to the power supply, and remove the power supply. (Refer to Chapter 5, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Cisco 7600 Series Router Installation Guide, or refer to Chapter 4, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Installation Guide.)
b.
For an AC power supply, disconnect the power cord from the power source, and remove the power supply. Do not touch the metal prongs on the power cord when it is still connected to the power supply. (Refer to Chapter 5, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Cisco 7600 Series Router Installation Guide, or refer to Chapter 4, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Installation Guide.)
Step 2
Locate the clock module. (See Figure 1 for Cisco 7603 router and Catalyst 6503 switch, Figure 2 for a Cisco 7604 router and Catalyst 6504 switch, and Figure 3 for the Cisco 7606 router.
NoteNote the position of the clock module before you remove it from the chassis because you must install the new clock module in the same position.
Step 3
Remove the three securing screws that secure the clock module.
Step 4
Carefully lift and remove the clock module, placing it on an antistatic mat or foam.
Step 5
Remove the new clock module from the antistatic bag.
Step 6
Hold the clock module with the plug away from you.
Step 7
Carefully press the clock module onto the connector.
Step 8
Replace the three securing screws.
Step 9
Install the power supply. (Refer to Chapter 5, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Cisco 7600 Series Router Installation Guide, or refer to Chapter 4, "Removal and Replacement Procedures," in the Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Installation Guide.)

Verifying the Installation
To verify the status of the clock module, perform these steps:
Step 1
Power up the router or switch.
Step 2
From the EXEC prompt (Router>), enter enable to enter privileged EXEC mode.
Step 3
Enter the password assigned to the system.
Step 4
Enter the show environment status command to verify the status of the replaced clock module.
This example shows that the clock module is functioning properly:
Router> enablePassword:Router#Router> show environment statusbackplane:operating clock count:2fan-tray 1:fan-tray 1 fan-fail:OKclock 1:clock 1 OK:OK, clock 1 clock-inuse:in-useclock 2:clock 2 OK:OK, clock 2 clock-inuse:not-in-use...Router>
NoteClock module A refers to clock 1 and clock module B refers to clock 2.
