Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.0
Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.0 is an Enterprise Stability Release that introduces several new features and improvements.
Key features
Release highlights include:
· The Workflow Engine feature is now GA. Implementers and administrators can use the Workflow Engine to add custom logic for event, alert and Situation processing.
· You can now configure Tempus, Cookbook and Merge Groups in the UI.
· Percona XtraDB Cluster is now the standard database for new Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager installations. Percona XtraDB is similar to MySQL with improvements for HA, scalability, and usability. HA Proxy supports features such as query routing to available database targets and load balancing. Even though MySQL is still supported for v7.3.0, Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager strongly recommends that upgrading customers perform the migration to Percona and HA Proxy. See Database Strategy for more information on the Cisco decision to switch to these products.
· The version of Apache Tomcat used by Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager has been upgraded to v9.0.22.
· The version of Elasticsearch used by Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager has been upgraded to v6.8.1.
· The Situation Manager Labeler is installed as part of the 7.3.0 installation and upgrade.
· Integrations improvements including:
— Office 365 Email, Splunk Streaming Add-On, Catchpoint, and Site24x7 integrations.
— You can now use brokers to install and run monitoring integrations.
Workflow Engine GA
We have improved Workflow Engine for GA release as follows:Workflow Engine
· Improved features:
— Filters now use raw fields instead of column names. You can now filter by any custom info field.
— You can now pass data between actions, for example you can pass a parameter to the next action.
— We've changed a number of field names for improved clarity.
— We've added loading indicators and descriptive messages to the UI.
· Added substantial UI validation support.
· Migrated the feature out of "Labs" (Early Access features) and enabled it by default.
· Resolved numerous bugs to stabilize the feature.
Percona database transition
Percona XtraDB Cluster is now our standard database for new Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager installations. It provides significant performance and scalability improvements compared to MySQL.
Cisco strongly encourages customers upgrading to v7.3.0 to migrate to Percona to take advantage of these features. MySQL continues to be supported for existing customers.
Cisco supports HA Proxy for load balancing, to evenly distribute performance demands across your entire deployment.
See Database Strategy for further information on the decision to implement Percona XtraDb Cluster and HA Proxy.
UI improvements
We've made the following improvements in the UI:
· You can configure Tempus, Cookbook and Merge Groups in the UI. For correlation capability, this provides true "in-UI" Situation design.
· Situation Preview provides a Situation list view with alert view below, to improve operator efficiency and Situational awareness.
· A collapsible left navigation panel makes better use of space in the UI for operators.
Platform improvements
The following platform improvements are included in v7.3.0:
· You can now go to Settings > Import/Export in the UI to export your system configuration and import the configuration from another system. It includes the configuration for Merge Groups, Tempus and Cookbooks. You can use this new feature to duplicate the configuration on multiple systems, and to copy the configuration from a development environment to production.
· You can now configure Moolets to run multiple Moobots. This enables you to override the functions of the default Moobot. You can use this feature to customize the actions of the Workflow Engine.
· A set of Graze API endpoints have been added for Merge Groups, Tempus and Cookbook functionality. See /document/preview/86898#UUID54e13affb4450a0f0f52cab51feddcd5 for details.Graze API
Integrations additions and improvements
You can now configure integrations Brokers. Brokers are clients that install and run monitoring integrations. Setting up Brokers on multiple hosts enables Continuous Assurance of your integrations. When you install a Broker, Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager automatically manages instances of your integrations across your Brokers.
The following integrations are new in v7.3.0:
· The Office 365 Email integration allows you to retrieve Office 365 emails using the Microsoft Graph API and send them to Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager as events.
· If you have installed the Splunk integration, you can configure the Splunk Streaming Add-On, which enables you to send results from the Splunk search pipeline to Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager.
· The Site24x7 integration allows you to retrieve events from Site24x7.
· You can configure a Catchpoint webhook to post alert data to Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager when an event occurs in Catchpoint.

As part of our ongoing investment into Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager, we have made changes to our database strategy and methodology for v7.3.x.
In Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.x the following database products are in use:
· Percona XtraDB Cluster 5.7 replaces Oracle MySQL CE.
· HA Proxy is a new component, supporting features such as query routing to available database targets and load balancing.
· Percona XtraBackup 2.4.4 replaces MySQL Dump to improve the efficiency of database backups.
Percona XtraDB Cluster is a high availability (HA) variant of Percona Server that supports the Galera replication protocol.
MySQL Community technology was the original database foundation for Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager. Percona Server offers improved high availability, scalability and functionality yet is based on the same code base, in fact the code is 99% identical. The differences are focused on high availability, scalability and usability which are key Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager database requirements.
Performance enhancements for Oracle's MySQL are also added to Percona, usually shortly after the Oracle release cycle. For exact details of platform and version support, including EOL dates, refer to Percona Software and Platform Lifecycle.
See /document/preview/112589#UUID0edf7a560d49b13a022c293e45c52f58 for instructions on how to migrate from MySQL to Percona. Perform the migration after you upgrade to Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.x.Migrate the databases to Percona
Cisco's dedicated team of support personnel are on hand to answer any questions you may have about the migration process. Our service and support teams can also guide you if you require direct assistance during the migration process. Contact support for more information.
Configuring a Percona cluster is an intensive operation. The primary (donor) node may not be able to accept write actions during the period in which the data is copied to the second node. Therefore the downtime is determined by the size of the database. You can use the database compression tool to reduce downtime during the migration. See the /document/preview/117372#UUID207c97759d0f4500a02170b00f6ce01b for more information.Table Compression Utility
Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.x is only supported on Percona XtraDB Cluster 5.7. If you are upgrading to v7.3.x from a previous version of Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager, Cisco strongly recommends that you migrate to Percona XtraDB Cluster 5.7.
Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.x is designed around Percona XtraDB XCluster as an integral component of the installation and upgrade process. This not only improves the migration process to v7.3.x but future versions of Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager as well.
All database enhancements and improvements will be delivered through Percona XtraDB Cluster. Database support for previous versions of Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager remains unchanged.
Cisco is deprecating the following Self Monitoring controls used to change the state of Moogfarmd and LAMs, from v7.3.0:
· Start
· Stop
· Restart
Services should be started and stopped from the command line, and restart occurs automatically when changes are made to configuration files.
Affected users
Impacts users with Super User permissions in Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager from v7.3.0 onward.
Cisco identified the following problems and defects at the time of the Cisco Crosswork Situation Manager v7.3.0 release.
Key |
Issue |
Graph Analyser MOOG-14092 |
A process deadlock can occur when the Graph Analyser utility analyzes a large number of topology nodes when executed. As a result, new alerts are not created. |
Maintenance Window Manager DST MOOG-12589 |
This issue can occur when configuring a recurring Maintenance Window, when timezone is not explicitly set. If you set the timezone to "use client Timezone", it synchronizes with the system MoogSvr is running on, instead of the client timezone. This can be problematic when the system adjusts for Daylight Savings Time (DST). The adjustment calculator may not be correct for the expected timezone. Cisco advises you to either set an explicit timezone or use the Graze API endpoint/MoogDb method createMaintenanceWindow with an explicit timezone. |
