This article relates to the Cisco TelePresence MCU 4203, Cisco TelePresence MCU MSE 8420, Cisco TelePresence IP VCR 2210, Cisco TelePresence VCR MSE 8220, Cisco TelePresence IP GW 3510, Cisco TelePresence MCU 4505 and Cisco TelePresence MCU MSE 8510 products.
Q. How do I connect my TelePresence Product to a Cisco Unified Communications Manager or Nortel Communication Server?
A. Both the Codian MCU / IP VCR / IP GW and Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM)/Nortel Communication Server have the ability to act as an H.323 gateway to other devices. This means that users of Cisco/Nortel IP phones can dial in to conferences on the MCU as audio-only participants. Cisco VTAdvantage users can connect as both video and audio participants. Similarly IP phone or VTAdvantage users can connect to the IP VCR and record or play back a recording, or route calls to other networks through the IP GW.
On Cisco CUCM
Follow these steps:
On the CUCM, add a new gateway of type H.323 gateway and set its Device name to be the IP address of the Codian product.
Create a route pattern on the CUCM to route calls to the new gateway.
You should now be able to dial from a Cisco IP phone in to the Codian product.
If the dialed number received by the MCU from CUCM matches the Numeric ID or the name of an active conference, the call will be connected directly to that conference. Otherwise, the call will be treated as having an unknown E.164 number and the subsequent action depends on how the MCU is set up; for example the call may be connected to the MCU's auto attendant. The phone's keypad can then be used to select the required conference.
If the dialed number received by the IP VCR from CUCM matches the Numeric ID of a recording, the recording is played back. Otherwise, the action depends on how the IP VCR is set up. The IP VCR may start recording, the auto attendant may be displayed (but you will not be able to navigate it) or the call may be disconnected.
When a call is placed to the IP GW, the dialed number will be matched against dial plan rules and the IP GW will act on the first rule which matched the dialed number.
On Nortel Communication Server
The principle of making the connection using H.323 trunks is the same for the Nortel as with CUCM. See your Nortel documentation.
From Codian devices
You can also connect in the other direction, to dial an IP extension from the Codian product. To do this:
On the MCU / IP VCR go to Gateways and click Add new H.323 gateway.
Type in a name of your choice and the IP address of the CUCM/Communication Server.
Click Add H.323 Gateway.
Go to Endpoints and click Add H.323.
Enter the fields for an H.323 endpoint whose address is the extension number of the IP phone you want to call, and whose H.323 gateway is the new gateway to the CUCM/Communication Server that you created in steps 1 to 3.
Click Add endpoint.
Now when you click Invite from a conference on the MCU, the extension number that you entered will be routed to the CUCM/Communication Server and the corresponding IP phone will ring.
On the IP VCR select the recording and click Call out and play session. Then select the pre-configured endpoint that you set up in steps 4 to 6.
On the IP GW, there is no need to specifically add the CUCM or Communication Server as a gateway. Calls can be routed to the CUCM or Communication Server by individual dial plan rule actions, using the syntax <server IP address> : <E.164 extension number>
Note that there is a known incompatibility with CUCM v5. On the Codian MCU go to Settings > Conferences and for Video codecs from MCU and Video codecs to MCU deselect the H.264 check boxes. On the IP VCR, go to Settings > Connections and for Video codecs from IP VCR and Video codecs to IP VCR deselect the H.264 check boxes. On the IP GW, go to Settings > Calls and for Video codecs from IP GW and Video codecs to IP GW deselect the H.264 check boxes.
