Features and Capabilities

Network Discovery Challenges

If you're like many mobile operators, you continue to deploy carrier Wi-Fi in your network to effectively handle data growth and offload the data from your macrocellular network. In addition, you want to simplify the subscriber experience of discovering, selecting, and authenticating from the cellular to the Wi-Fi network, while helping to ensure security.

The key is to avoid the issues that some users can experience today in mixed carrier Wi-Fi and macrocellular environments (such as poor connections and network "ping-pong"). Ultimately, it's best if the subscriber's experience moving between networks is managed by operator, not left to device-only-based logic.

The Cisco Access Policy Server helps to enable network-aware, configurable service provider access policy on devices. It uses an open S14 interface strategy for broad device and OS applicability and uptake. This improves the Wi-Fi and macrocellular discovery and authentication for access selection, giving subscribers better, more secure connection experiences.

This Cisco network solution offers personalized, network-aware device Access Network Selection (ANS) policy at device registration time. Dynamic, responsive policies run in real time in the device to discover and more securely authenticate to new networks. These rules and policies are based on user profile and current user location. They are configured to reflect the service provider's desired access selection use cases and business outcomes.

ANS rules for the devices may be based on cellular network status and forecast, traffic trend (daily, weekly, geo-location), site operations and maintenance, carrier, site, or access point expansion, and new phone or application launch programs.
