Explore the Landscape of IT: No Permission Slip Required


The series of Virtual Field Trip videos covers a range of topics to engage students in continuing their education and building their career path. The companion module that accompanies each video reinforces the content from the Virtual Field Trip.

     

Promoting IT Careers

Virtual Field Trips are part of the Promoting IT Careers initiative, which helps young people explore the skills and education needed to succeed in information technology and also encourages the development of relationships between students and professionals.

The Job Search Begins (May 2007)

Our second Virtual Field Trip consists of five separate videos and companion modules. These segments may be viewed individually or as a whole.

  

Virtual Field Trip Description

This Virtual Field Trip prepares students for five key aspects of their job search:

    1. The online job search (8 min 16 sec)
    2. The resume (8 min 43 sec)
    3. The cover letter (4 min 11 sec)
    4. The interview (9 min 20 sec)
    5. Networking (3 min 56 sec)

Each topic is addressed in its own video and is accompanied by a companion module and student worksheet to extend student learning.

Suggested Amount of Time Approximately four to nine minutes for each video plus time for classroom discussion or activities as outlined in each companion module and student worksheet.
Companion Module Components and Student Worksheets

Module objectives outline the purpose of this Virtual Field Trip.

 

Learning outcomes identify tasks students should be able to accomplish during and after this Virtual Field Trip.

 

The suggested virtual field trip itinerary demonstrates one way to incorporate this Virtual Field Trip into the classroom.

 

Student worksheets help students integrate the information presented in the corresponding videos.

The video survey helps assess participants’ perceptions of the IT and networking industries before and after they watch the video.

 

The IT careers interest inventory, used here with permission from CyberCareers.org, combines learning preferences, personality style, and multiple intelligences to help students identify IT careers that are of interest to them.
