This module provides a brief overview of the history of telephony, with emphasis on its relationship to using the Internet Protocol (IP) to transport voice as well as data. Concepts that you will need to set up a simple VoIP configuration are introduced, as well as basic voice troubleshooting methodology and commands. Then you have a chance to try out what you have learned in the hands-on Configuration Labs and three troubleshooting Challenge Labs.
Objectives:
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Understand the basic history of telephony
- Understand basic legacy telephony concepts, such as tip and ring and switching
- Differentiate between current and legacy telephone network architectures
- Understand and apply basic telephone network concepts, and how they apply to VoIP configuration
- Identify telephony connection and wiring components to the telephone company and Internet service providers
- Identify the basic factors needed to place a voice call over IP
- Identify the difference between analog and digital telephone connections
- Understand basic signaling concepts and identify the differences between loop start and ground start connections
- Recognize some of the basic types of packet telephony
- Recognize some of the benefits of using packet telephony
- Define the procedures used to set up and release calls
- Identify the Cisco VoIP implementation
- Configure a basic analog VoIP connection
- Understand troubleshooting methodology
- List troubleshooting commands available for VoIP
- Identify some common VoIP connection problems
- Troubleshoot a simple VoIP connection
Labs
- Configure a simple VoIP connection using two analog telephones and two Cisco 3640 routers.
