CTT-TAC: Analog Voice Internetworking with E&M Signaling

TAC - PPP

Start Here

Detailed Information

In this module, you will learn about trunks, analog E&M signaling, and E&M configuration and troubleshooting. E&M signaling types, start dial supervision signaling protocols, and common VoIP configuration elements are discussed. Hands-on Configuration Labs reinforce the concepts covered in the written tutorial and give you a chance to try out what you have learned about VoIP troubleshooting in the Challenge Labs.

Objectives:

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  • Differentiate between Foreign eXchange Office (FXO), Foreign eXchange Service (FXS), and E&M signaling
  • Understand the basic differences between central office (CO) trunks and private branch exchange (PBX) trunks
  • Understand the concept of trunk signaling and how it relates to supervisory signaling
  • Identify and understand the uses of the five different types of E&M signaling and E&M interfaces
  • Define the three start dial supervision protocols, and understand how they are implemented on Cisco 3640 routers
  • Configure a basic analog VoIP connection using E&M interfaces and PBX trunking
  • Understand the use of the number expansion feature in an analog E&M configuration
  • Understand the concepts of input gain and output attenuation
  • Identify the use of a gain/loss plan in a network
  • Understand and configure the interdigit timeout period on a router
  • Identify some VoIP connection problems commonly found when using E&M signaling
  • Troubleshoot an analog VoIP connection using E&M

Labs

  • Configure analog VoIP connections on two Cisco 3640 routers using E&M interfaces and PBX trunking.
  • Configure an analog E&M VoIP connection using the following features:
    • Number expansion
    • Input gain
    • Output attenuation
  • Challenge Labs (3)
