Detailed Information

In this module, you will learn the concepts and processes of LAN switching including the factors that motivated switching technologies, the various types of switching technologies available, and how LAN switches operate. This module also covers managing LAN switches, configuring some of the parameters on a switch, and the role of VLANs in LAN switching.

Objectives:

  • Understand increased bandwidth requirements and performance problems experienced in shared networks
  • Describe the concepts and issues involved in shared-media networks
  • Learn the benefits of segmenting networks using bridges, switches, and routers
  • Illustrate the operation of LAN bridges
  • Summarize the features, benefits, and limitations of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of various types of switching technologies
  • Differentiate between half-duplex and full-duplex operation of LAN switches
  • Explain the various modes of switching, including store-and-forward, cut-through, and modified cut-through (or FragmentFree) switching
  • Recognize and use LAN management techniques
  • Connect to a Cisco switch to engage in configuration or network management
  • Configure system parameters of a Cisco switch
  • Configure port parameters of a Cisco switch
  • Administer Cisco IOS® Software commands to troubleshoot network problems involving a switch
  • Explain the concepts, benefits, and operations of VLANs
  • Configure VLANs on a Cisco Catalyst Switch
  • Describe the operations and benefits of the Spanning-Tree Protocol
