Presently: President of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Portugal, since July 2005; Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL), since 1993; Correspondent Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences since 1995; Member of the Luso-American Foundation for Development (FLAD) Consultative Council since 1997; Member of the Scientific and Technological Council of Taguspark – Science and Technology Park since 1997.

Formerly: President of FCT – Science and Technology Foundation (the Portuguese Research Council) between 1997 and 2002; Member of the European Science Foundation Governing Council (2000-2002); President of the Scientific and Technological Council of Taguspark (2000-04); Delegate of Portugal to the OECD Science and Technology Policy Committee and to the OECD Global Science Forum (1998-2002); Member of the Portugal General Commissariat for EXPO 2000 Hannover (1998-00); Coordinator of the National Research Units Evaluation, Ministry of Science and Technology (1996-97); Member of the Natural and Exact Sciences Coordination Commission of the Scientific and Technological Research National Board (1992-94).

University degrees: PhD (1982) and MSc (1980) in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, USA; Electrical Engineer – Telecommunications and Electronics (1975) from IST.

Areas of research: Dynamical systems, differential equations and nonlinear analysis, specifically in infinite dimensional systems.

Authorship of books: An Introduction to Infinite Dimensional Dynamical Systems – Geometric Theory, Springer-Verlag, 1984, Dynamics in Infinite Dimensions, Springer-Verlag, 2002, both in co-autorship with Jack K. Hale e Waldyr M.
