Session Title: Bailout Your Police: Reinvest in Proactive Community Partnerships
Room: Colorado Convention Center – 108-110-112
Session Description
Has the world economic crisis impacted the delivery of policing services? Is policing in a crisis? How can police services meet the challenges they face now and in the foreseeable future?
With a focus on three key interrelated issues - money, demographics, and technology, this workshop will explore how police can enhance service delivery by tapping underutilized resources.
- Law enforcement agencies worldwide face serious financial challenges brought on by the downturn in the economy; including budget cuts, personnel layoffs, and reduced service delivery capabilities. What are the future outlooks?
- Population changes in key demographic groups, including juveniles and senior citizens, as well as increased community ethnic and class diversity, are resulting in increased social strain and conflict, which then impact the demand for police and other social services that rely on the same budgetary resources. How can police address these issues and demographics?
- Rapidly changing technologies in all areas: communications; internet; and transportation; are impacting police and communities alike. These are often linked with demographics, expenditures, increasing crime, and terrorist threats, to challenge police service delivery. How can advanced technologies improve police services?
This workshop will include speakers addressing each topic and explore how effective community partnerships should be used to mitigate negative economic impacts, while exploring how strengthening and enhancing community partnerships can provide low-cost high-impact solutions to proactively improve services impacted by financial crisis. The session will include a Town Hall type discussion with ideas presented by attendees and IACP/Cisco Community Policing Award Winner’s. Due to severe economic conditions possibly impacting conference attendance, the workshop will be broadcast interactively on the internet utilizing technology from Cisco Systems, as discussed in the session, and as a demonstration of technology available to law enforcement to save valuable resources while still providing quality services.
