Problem Description
As listed above in the product affected section, the following port adapters (PA) are not compatible with VIP2-50 hardware versions 2.02 and below:

The affected versions were manufactured before April 1, 1998. To find the date a board was shipped out of manufacturing, look up the serial number at the Cisco Service Contract Center.
Note: VIPs, including all VIP2-50 with Top Asembly 800-02252-05 or 73-2167-05 or later at hardware version 2.02, and all VIP2-50 at hardware version 2.03 or later, are not affected by this issue.
Background
In May 1998, a hardware change was made to the VIP2-50 to solve a bit swapping bug, CSCdj52240. This change reversed a significant bit on the VIP2-50. The following port adapters require the fix for CSCdj52240 to operate correctly in a VIP2-50:

Problem Symptoms
If an older version of VIP2-50 is used in conjunction with one of the port adapters mentioned in the field notice, the following error will appear on the command line interface (CLI):
[Name of PA] in bay [bay number] not supported on this version of VIP2-50.
To determine the version number of the board, issue the show diag command on the CLI. Both examples below are of good cards.

Workaround/Solution
To upgrade your VIP2-50 to the current revision, please submit a return materials authorization (RMA) to the Cisco Technical Assistance Center.
