Products Affected

Problem Description

Digital voice port adapters require additional Digital Signal Processor (DSP) static RAM (SRAM) when used with Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.1(4)T and later. The current non-enhanced version of these products have 128 KB of DSP SRAM. Enhanced digital voice port adapters come with 256 KB of DSP SRAM memory, which will support future additional voice and voice-band (modem, fax) features for multiservice networks. Fixes for the bugs found in Cisco IOS 12.1(3)T and earlier will be implemented in Cisco IOS 12.1(4)T and later releases.

Note: There are no upgrade kits available. The SRAM is a hardwired memory component and cannot be upgraded in the field. To run Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(4)T and later, take advantage of the upgrade program.

Background

Digital voice port adapters have 128 KB of DSP SRAM memory. This amount of memory has proven to be insufficient to operate with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(4)T and later versions. All Cisco IOS Software releases earlier than 12.1(4)T are supported on the non-enhanced cards, including interim releases between Cisco IOS 12.1(3)T and 12.1(4)T.

Note: An End of Sale has been announced on the non-enhanced version of these cards. It is recommended to migrate to the enhanced version and take advantage of the upgrade path.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco's enhanced digital voice port adapters (PA-VXC-2TE1+ and PA-VXB-2TE1+) have 256 KB of DSP SRAM memory; the non-enhanced digital voice port adapters have 128 KB of DSP SRAM. This additional memory enables the enhanced voice port adapter to run Cisco IOS 12.1(4)T and later, thus enabling additional multiservice features.

All PA-VXC-2TE1 and PA-VXB-2TE1 cards can be exchanged for PA-VXC-2TE1+ and PA-VXB-2TE1+ cards through the standard Return Materials Authorization (RMA) process, per the global planner.
