Problem Description
Some MultiChannel port adapters installed on VIP4-50 or VIP4-80 interface processors may not power up or be recognized by the system.
This problem only exists on VIP4-50s with part number version 800-06095-02 or earlier and on VIP4-80s with part number version 800-03708-03 or earlier. VIP4-50s with part number version 800-06095-03 or later and VIP4-80s with part number 800-03708-04 or later are not affected by this problem. This means that the port adapters listed in the Products Affected section should work fine in the later versions of the VIP4-50s and VIP4-80s.
Background
Some MultiChannel port adapters installed on VIP4-50/80 line cards have been reported as not powering on or not being recognized by the Cisco 7500 system in which they are installed. Only the combination of VIP4-50/80 processor and specific MultiChannel port adapters exhibit this problem. This problem does not occur with the VIP2, Cisco 7100, or Cisco 7200 systems. The root cause of the problem has been determined to be due to a zero ohm resistor on the +5V Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus of the port adapter. Removing the zero ohm resistor on the port adapter resolves the problem.
Problem Symptoms
When the MultiChannel port adapter installed on a VIP4-50 or VIP4-80 line card is powered on, the port adapter enable LED does not come on. The following console message is displayed: Port Adapter card type 65535 is not recognized. Re-seating the VIP4 card will not clear the problem.
Workaround/Solution
The MultiChannel port adapter must be replaced with an updated MultiChannel port adapter for successful function with the VIP4-50/80 line card. Affected port adapters can be replaced using the standard return materials authorization (RMA) process.
VIP2 line cards are not affected, so they can be substituted for the VIP4 line card in critical situations.

Note: Some MultiChannel port adapters were updated on Deviation Number D000637 and will have a Deviation sticker labeled D000637 on the printed circuit board of the PA next to the -73 part number. The Top Assy number and Revision levels were not changed in the PA EPROM. The port adapters updated under the Deviation are acceptable for use, however, will show as the old revision electronically.
