As competition intensifies, operators of optical transport networks are increasingly focused on time to revenue, service velocity, flexible service-level agreements (SLAs), preemptive service assurance, and continuous reduction in the cost of operations. In recognition of this pursuit, Cisco Systems introduces the Cisco Transport Manager 3.1. Cisco Transport Manager, one of the industry's most advanced optical transport domain managers, delivers the full power of the Cisco ONS family of optical networking products to the operations personnel and back-office systems of network operators. Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 is a major new release of Cisco Transport Manager, which was initially launched in June 2000. This product bulletin summarizes the new features that are available in Cisco Transport Manager 3.1, as well as ordering information and references to more detailed information.
In direct response to the rapidly growing Cisco Transport Manager customer base, Cisco is committed to continuously adding value to support ongoing reduction in the cost of operating Cisco optical transport networks. This commitment is demonstrated by the new features available in Cisco Transport Manager 3.1. The following is a list of the major new features that have been implemented in Cisco Transport Manager 3.1.
Cisco Transport Manager Releaes 3.1 includes a native tool known as a network element explorer, which supports equipment provisioning. This tool has been expanded to include equipment provisioning for the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET Multiservice Platform (MSP) and the Cisco ONS 15327 SONET MSP. Past versions of Cisco Transport Manager used a cross-launch of Cisco Transport Controller to support equipment provisioning for these platforms. This new functionality in the network element explorer implements these equipment provisioning functions into Cisco Transport Manager for a common user experience. The results are lower training and operations expenses, and more control over equipment provisioning functions. For example, when Cisco Transport Manager launched Cisco Transport Controller, it had no ability to restrict users' access to certain functions. The user could impact connectivity between the network element and Cisco Transport Manager. In the new network element explorer, users cannot directly affect connectivity because these functions are removed.
This scenario creates the framework for future security enhancements where a network element may be parceled out among many network operators. In the future, the Cisco Transport Manager administrator will be able to assign users access (read only or read and write) at the port or circuit level instead of the network element level.
Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 can scale up to 2500 Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSP network elements in a single installation, more than in any previous Cisco Transport Manager release. The installation that reaches these high scalability limits has to be on a certain class of server that can handle large amounts of data and high processing rates. By supporting this feature, companies that implement Cisco Transport Manager in a very large network can realize significant capital expenditure savings by consolidating all of their element management in a single installation. In previous releases, management of such a large number of network elements required multiple installations.
Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 incorporates many enhancements to existing functionality via the GateWay/CORBA interface. Added are methods that support performance monitoring, equipment provisioning, protection group inventory, and maintenance operations, including loopback provisioning. These features add even more functionality to the GateWay/CORBA interface, which already leads the industry with its functionality, stability and ease of integration.
In the past, circuit management has been limited to a small number of network elements, but Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 breaks through this barrier to bring a new level of circuit management to customers. This release is able to manage circuits with up to 400 network elements as a single circuit--such a vast improvement over what customers were able to do in the past that it will revolutionize customers' circuit management operations. Customers that design their networks with many network elements between circuit endpoints can manage these circuits as a single entity rather than as many entities, greatly simplifying operations for not only circuit management but also fault management and performance management.
Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 incorporates new features to support bulk network element security management. A screen for each network element type allows the user to inventory, add, delete, and edit users on all selected network elements of that type. This greatly increases the user's ability to manage network element security by spanning all the network elements managed by Cisco Transport Manager under a single instance.
Another new feature of Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 is implementation of database disk free space element management system (EMS) alarms. When the disk space available for the database shrinks below a preset (and user-definable) percentage, an EMS alarm visible only to administrators is raised. The three alarm thresholds--critical, major and minor--give administrators a more proactive monitoring solution for their Cisco Transport Manager server. The ability of the server to monitor itself removes that responsibility from customers.
The Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 upgrade package (product name CTM-3.1-UPG=) is available for any customer currently using Cisco Transport Manager 3.x who wishes to upgrade to Cisco Transport Manager 3.1. All existing right-to-use (RTU) licenses remain valid for Cisco Transport Manager 3.1.
Cisco Transport Manager 3.1 can be ordered online or from your sales representative. All NEs managed by Cisco Transport Manager must be covered by a Cisco Transport Manager RTU license, regardless of how that license is obtained. The RTU license is independent of the Cisco Transport Manager release and is transferable across releases.
Prior to Cisco Transport Manager 3.1, Cisco Transport Manager RTU licenses could only be bought separately from the NEs. Cisco is introducing a new pricing strategy that essentially changes the way that an RTU license is obtained. The new strategy will be to include a single RTU license along with the supported network element. Once the new pricing strategy is fully implemented, all NEs managed by Cisco Transport Manager will have an integral RTU license. During the transition period, RTU licenses will be obtainable through both a separate purchase and as an integral part of the NE on the basis of the NE release. To purchase Cisco Transport Manager RTU licenses for NEs without integral Cisco Transport Manager RTU licenses, it is necessary to purchase one or more of the RTU license bundles listed below. This applies to NEs in the field that are not currently being managed by Cisco Transport Manager, and NEs that will be shipping without an integral RTU license.

A Software Application Support Plus Upgrades (SASU) contract must be purchased to receive access to technical support through Cisco Technical Assistance Center or Cisco.com. SASU also provides Cisco Transport Manager software upgrades as they are made available for the duration of the customer's contract.SP-SAU-xxx should be used for service provider. CON-SAU-xxx should be used for enterprise customer. Cisco SASU does not cover third-party products.
