Cisco IOS Software
Release 12.2

Cisco IOS® Software Major Release 12.2 is a consolidation of leading-edge networking technologies and features coupled with an ongoing testing and quality enhancement program. It contains all the advanced features and new platform support introduced in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1T early deployment releases.

Release 12.2 is a continuation of Cisco networking leadership in helping customers realize the power of the Internet. Today, change is happening faster than ever before, and Cisco works with customers to turn that change into a competitive advantage.

Cisco is uniquely positioned to provide end-to-end solutions to meet the needs of small to large enterprise and service provider customers through its platform offerings and world-class customer support.

Features and Benefits

Based on Early Deployment Release 12.1T, Release 12.2 incorporates more than 250 advanced network services in the areas of connectivity and scalability, Internet Protocol (IP) and routing, manageability, multicast, Quality of Service (QoS), reliability, security, Systems Network Architecture (SNA) evolution, switching, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and voice. Cisco IP network services are described in Table 1.

Table 1  Cisco IOS Software IP Network Services

IP Network Service
Connectivity and Scalability

Cisco IOS Software provides end-to-end connectivity and scalable growth, from twisted-pair devices to wireless networks.

Internet Protocol (IP) and Routing

Cisco IOS Software supports a wide range of IP services, routing services, and routing protocols; including new Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Address Translation (NAT), and Host Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) features.

Cisco IOS Software manageability solutions deliver end-to-end control for Cisco product-based networks, including new Service Assurance Agent enhancements, various MIBs, and Interface Index Persistence.

IP multicasting is a bandwidth-conserving technology that reduces traffic by simultaneously delivering a single stream of information to thousands of corporate recipients and homes, including Source Specific Multicast (SSM) and Bi-directional Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) support.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) fuses the intelligence of routing with the performance of switching and provides significant benefits to networks with a pure IP architecture as well as those with IP and ATM or a mix of other Layer 2 technologies, including Traffic Engineering Enhancements at Release 12.2.

Quality of Service

Cisco IOS Software QoS enables complex networks to control and predictably service a variety of applications, including Class-based Shaping and Marking, QoS Device Manager, and Distributed Low Latency Queuing (LLQ), Traffic Shaping, and RTP Header Compression.

Cisco IOS Software reliability services provide the network redundancy required for business-critical operations including PRM Host support.

Successfully using Internet technologies requires an increased need to protect valuable data and network resources from corruption and intrusion including SSH and Pre-authentication support.

SNA Evolution

Cisco IOS Software IBM services provide end-to-end solutions for IBM networks, from the client to the mainframe, including TN3270 Connectivity Enhancements.

Cisco IOS Software switching supports small and growing businesses through high-end routing platforms for building IP-optimized backbones, including Media Gateway Control Protocol support on the Cisco AS5300.

Cisco offers two families of network video products—the Cisco IP/TV® and IP/VC Solutions—that enable powerful new end-to-end video communications solutions over IP networks.

Virtual Private Networks

VPNs use advanced encryption and tunneling to permit organizations to establish secure, end-to-end private network connections over third-party networks such as the Internet or extranets, including Inter-Autonomous Systems for MPLS VPN support.

Innovators use Cisco IOS Software voice services to introduce enterprise voice capabilities—at extremely low incremental cost—via existing network infrastructures, including Voice over FR Using FRF.11 and 12, Caller ID, T.37 and .38 Fax Gateway support.

Hardware Platform Support

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2 supports over 32 Cisco platform families, including the newly introduced:

Deployment Recommendation

Customers who have deployed any of the early deployment releases (i.e., Release 12.1T and 12.1 based X-releases) may upgrade to Release 12.2 to benefit from improved software quality and ongoing support.

The following 12.1-based X-releases are incorporated in Release 12.2:

Additionally, customers who are currently deploying an older release of Cisco IOS Software should consider upgrading to Release 12.2 in order to access advanced networking features or new hardware platform support, as well as ongoing support of current features.

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2 is currently available for download from Cisco Connection Online (CCO) Software Center (, via CD from Cisco reseller partners, or with new Cisco products that utilize Cisco IOS Software. Release 12.2 was available in May 2001.
