Product Bulletin, No. 1231

Announcing Orderability of Route Switch
Processor 4+
and End of Sales
Route Switch Processor 4

Cisco Systems and the WAN Edge Business Unit are pleased to announce immediate orderability of the Route Switch Processor 4+ (RSP4+) for Cisco 7500 Series routers. Effective immediately, the RSP4+ is the default on Route Switch Processor 4 (RSP4)-based Cisco 7500 platforms.

The RSP4+ is an enhanced version of the RSP4 with larger default program memory (64 MB), Error Correction Code (ECC) memory protection, and compatibility with Cisco IOS® Software releases that support the current RSP4. This additional functionality is included with no increase in price, further enhancing the value of Cisco 7500 Series routers.

Cisco is committed to protecting the investments customers have made in Cisco equipment. Thus, customers wishing to migrate from RSP1, RSP2, or RSP4 processors to the RSP4+ may do so through the Cisco Technology Migration Program. The RSP4+ is included in this program.

End of Sales: RSP4

Concurrent with RSP4+ orderability, Cisco Systems is announcing the upcoming End of Sales (EOS) for the RSP4. This action does not affect other RSP models, including RSP2, RSP4+, and RSP8.

Product Substitution

RSP4+ is a direct substitution for the RSP4. It is functionally identical to the RSP4 with the addition of 64 MB of default program memory and ECC memory protection. RSP4+ is supported by Cisco IOS Software releases that support RSP4.

Support Programs

EOS refers to the time when certain products are no longer available for new purchases. It does not apply to the service and support programs for those products. Cisco will continue to support the RSP4 after EOS through the SMARTnet and comprehensive maintenance programs. Customers with either of these service contracts are entitled to free software updates, 24-hour phone support through the Technical Assistance Center, and advance replaced hardware for repairs. Comprehensive maintenance customers also receive onsite service. Customers who do not have a maintenance contract can purchase software updates and hardware repair services from Cisco to meet specific requirements rather than full-service coverage. Cisco is committed to providing software support for a minimum of three years and providing hardware support for a period of five years after the EOS date.
