Cisco 7200 Network Services Engine 1 (NSE-1)
With the general availability of the new high-performance NPE-G1 processor for the Cisco 7200 series, Cisco Systems® announces the end of life of the Cisco® 7200 Network Services Engine 1 (NSE-1). The last day to order the NSE-1 is March 2, 2004. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until March 2, 2009. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the NSE-1.
This notice affects only the Cisco NSE-1 on the Cisco 7200 Series Router. Other Cisco 7200 processing engines (NPEs) and other Cisco PXF (Parallel Express Forwarding)-based platforms are not affected.

Product Migration Options
The recommended replacement for the Cisco NSE-1 is the Cisco NPE-G1 (Table 3). With up to one million packets per second (Mpps) forwarding performance and broad Cisco IOS® Software feature support, the NPE-G1 is an ideal investment protection option for customers requiring higher performance and greater scalability. Alternatively, customers can also migrate to the Cisco NPE-400 for similar performance for non-PXF features.

Cisco offers an aggressive trade-in program called the Technology Migration Program. This program enables Cisco customers to upgrade their existing Cisco or competitive network equipment. To encourage an easy and cost-effective upgrade to the latest network processor engine, customers who trade in the Cisco NSE-1 (or NSE-1 coupled with the I/O controller) can obtain a substantial credit toward the purchase price of a Cisco NPE-G1.
Software Release Comparison
PXF software feature support for the Cisco NSE-1 is available in the following Cisco IOS Software releases: 12.1E, 12.2M, 12.3M, and 12.3T.
Note that as of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2S Release 3, PXF features on the Cisco NSE-1 and Cisco 7401 will no longer be supported in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2S. PXF support will continue in the other releases mentioned in this announcement. This restriction does not apply to other PXF-based platforms.
For customers seeking to upgrade to Cisco NPE-G1, software support is available in the following Cisco IOS Software releases: 12.3M, 12.3T, 12.1E, 12.2S, and 12.2B.
