The Cisco 700 Series for ISDN Internet Access
Affordable, Easy to Use Internet Access for Every PC Over a Single ISDN LineThe Internet is a powerful tool for small and home office environments. Today, even a few users can leverage the World Wide Web to do the work of many—buying, selling, communicating, finding new customers, linking to suppliers, and keeping close tabs on competitors from anywhere in the world. But for small and home offices, delivering fast Internet access to multiple desktops used to be a sizable challenge. Today, the Cisco 700 series Internet access devices provide an ideal, affordable solution that allows multiple PCs to easily share one Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) line for simultaneous access to the Internet.
Recommended for up to five users, the Cisco 700 series is designed for small offices and home-based businesses that need shared and cost-effective access to the Internet. And since these offices typically do not have networking expertise, the Cisco 700 series is also designed to be extremely easy to install.
Figure 1 The Cisco 700 Series for ISDN Internet Access
Internet Access for Multiple Users over One ISDN Line
The Cisco 700 series allows multiple PCs to access the Internet simultaneously over a single ISDN line without the need for multiple ISDN cards and lines, nor reliance on server-based networking hardware and software. A single Cisco 700 series can make everyone in the office more productive.Easy to Install
With the Cisco 700 series, you need just three quick and easy steps to connect to the Internet:1.
Connect the color-matching cables from the Cisco 700 series to your PC or hub and to your ISDN wall jack.
2.
Insert the Cisco Fast Step™ installation CD-ROM.
3.
Enter your Internet account information (select service provider, and enter username and password for specified Internet service providers [ISPs]).
Although the Cisco 700 series is a router, the devices are aseasy to install as an ISDN card, with no routing or networking experience required, and no complex configuration needed.
New Cisco Fast Step V.1.3 software, included free with the Cisco 700 series, is a wizards-based tool for quick and easy connections to ISPs. Configuration parameters for popular service providers in Germany and Austria are preset for fast connection to the Internet.
Affordable Internet Connections for Small Offices
With the Cisco 700 series, there's no need to install a separate ISDN card in every PC to provide Internet access to new users—and no need to have multiple ISDN lines or multiple Internet access accounts. The Cisco 700 series includes everything you need for fast access, without the need for additional hardware or software in a dedicated PC or central server. And when you want to give Internet access to new users, just plug PCs into a hub or the Ethernet port on the Cisco 700 series—no additional hardware or software configuration is required.High-Speed Internet Connections
Unlike ISDN cards, the Cisco 700 series doesn't steal performance from a PC's main processor or add work for your central server. Fast call set up with automatic dialup provides quick, automated connections to the Internet and online services. And Cisco 700 series Internet access devices include throughput-boosting data compression, so you can browse the Web and receive downloads quickly.Integrated CAPI Support for Optimal Performance for European Markets
The Cisco 700 series is designed to take full advantage of popular European ISDN services. Integrated support for common application programming interface (CAPI) applications provides access to services—such as faxing and online banking—and a range of leading Internet service providers.CAPI is an application programming interface standard used to access ISDN equipment connected to basic rate interfaces (BRIs) and primary rate interfaces (PRIs). Using a Cisco 700 series with RVS-COM Lite software provides a truly shared network environment and other benefits including:
•
Soft fax (for analog and digital lines) for use with software such as AVM's Fritz!32, Symantec WinFax Pro, and RVS-COM Lite 1.6
•
Soft modem for e-mail and Web access to Internet service providers such as T-Online and CompuServe
•
File and Euro-File Transfer
•
Electronic banking and shopping with German T-Online
•
Third-party CAPI-compliant applications
Cisco 700 series Internet access devices are available with a one-user or five-user RVS-COM Lite license. PC clients who have RVS-COM Lite installed can use CAPI, soft fax, and soft modem applications over the router.
For further details on the CAPI standard, visit www.capi.org.
Product Details
Cisco 700 series Internet access devices are available in several configurations. For those small or home offices who already have a local-area network (LAN) and want a fast, shared connection to the Internet, the Cisco 761M with a single ISDN and Ethernet port is the best solution. For small or home offices who are establishing their first LAN, the Cisco 775M provides a single ISDN port, four Ethernet ports (integrated hub), and two analog telephone interfaces that allow standard telephones, fax machines, and modems to share the ISDN line. These analog telephone interfaces eliminate the need for multiple telephone lines and expensive ISDN telephones. They also support supplementary telephone services such as call waiting, call hold, call transfer, call-forwarding (Sweden and Finland), and three-way conferencing. Table 1 provides an overview of the two models in the Cisco 700 series, and Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the rear panel of each model.Table 1 Overview of the Cisco 700 Series Models

IP routing for up to 30 PCs (recommended for up to fiveusers)
•
STAC (4:1) compression for faster transmission
•
X.25 over ISDN (D) for point of sale (POS) applications
•
Bandwidth on demand (BOD) and Multilink PPP (MLP) for B channel aggregation
