The Cisco 10000 Series 8-Port E3/DS3 ATM Line Card provides high-density connectivity and deployment flexibility for the Cisco 10000 Series. Combined with comprehensive features for broadband aggregation, the high-performance, carrier-class Cisco 10000 Series delivers unmatched deployment flexibility, reliability, and high-density connectivity for service provider broadband aggregation (Figure 1).

Product Description

The Cisco 10000 Series 8-Port E3/DS3 ATM Line Card features high-performance programmable segmentation and reassembly (SAR), adapted for various applications, including advanced traffic management, cell scheduling, and integrated buffer management. The programmable nature of SAR allows flexibility for software upgrades and support for new standards. By mapping IP class of service (CoS) to ATM quality of service (QoS) on the Cisco 10000 Series ATM line cards, the flow of mission-critical data can be effectively managed across heterogeneous IP and ATM networks.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Per-virtual circuit and per-virtual path traffic shaping—The Cisco 10000 Series 8-Port E3/DS3 ATM Line Card supports both per-virtual circuit and per-virtual path traffic shaping, providing flexibility and control over every virtual circuit and virtual path configured. Per-virtual circuit and per-virtual path traffic shaping allows bursts of traffic to conform to a predetermined contract, ensuring that excessive traffic from one virtual circuit does not incur data loss on other virtual circuits. This function is very important when connecting to an ATM WAN or public ATM network, where ATM switches may discard excessive traffic at the point of ingress.
  • Hardware-based traffic shaping—The Cisco 10000 Series 8-Port E3/DS3 ATM Line Card supports IP layer traffic shaping on the high-performance Parallel Express Forwarding (PXF) network processors of the Cisco 10000 Series Performance Routing Engine (PRE). The ATM layer traffic shaping is supported on the module. Supporting traffic shaping in hardware means that there is no performance degradation when traffic shaping is enabled, allowing line-rate performance with traffic shaping.
  • Standards-based ATM implementation for interoperability—The 8-port E3/DS3 ATM line card is a standards-based ATM interface that allows customers to integrate the Cisco 10000 Series into existing ATM networks. By implementing a standards-based version of ATM, Cisco ensures that customers will be able to easily and quickly integrate the Cisco 10000 Series into their current ATM network. Further, by using standard operations, administration, and management (OA&M) F4 and F5, customers will benefit from lower management and administrative expenses and improved overall manageability. Network managers can take advantage of Cisco 10000 Series traffic management and QoS features on the E3/DS3 ATM module.
